Jimmy Appears with Warren Buffett at Student Luncheon

While Jimmy Buffett was in Omaha last week he made a surprise appearance at a luncheon for college students hosted by Warren Buffett.

At the luncheon a “reserved” sign was posted across from Buffett and in between Schumacher and Inschauspe. Buffett excused himself from the UW table to address the entire luncheon crowd, announcing, “This has all been a setup. I am not the real Buffett.”

To the surprise of the crowd, in walked Jimmy Buffett, a close personal friend of the other Buffett.

With guitar in hand, Jimmy Buffett went to the end of the UW students’ table, put one foot up on a chair and broke into “Smart Woman (In a Real Short Skirt)” followed by “Margaritaville,” the song that made him famous.

“During lunch, we heard a few stories from their friendship, and learned that out of curiosity, they’ve checked through DNA tests to see if they were related — they’re not,” Schumacher says.

“It was so awesome to have Jimmy Buffett playing two feet in front of us and, on top of that, to sit right next to him and right across from Warren Buffett at lunch,” Inschauspe says. “By far, one of the best experiences in my life.”

Rumor: Buffett to Play Comerica Park in Detroit

Detroit is a staple of Jimmy Buffett’s summer tour every year and with most of the regular cities already announced, many were wondering when the Motor City date would be released. It’s looking like the reason for the delay may be because Buffett won’t be playing the usual DTE Energy Music Theatre but will perform at Comerica Park, the home of Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers.

We’re told that officials at Comerica Park have confirmed a date of Saturday, July 28th and that the local parrothead club has received this same information.

If this strong rumor pans out, what do you Detroit folks think of the change in venue? Leave a comment below.

Buffett Puts on a Show in Omaha

It’d been over 25 years since Jimmy played a public concert in Omaha, but he made up for it with a memorable show that started with an introduction from “Uncle Warren.” The Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett, came out at the beginning of the show to introduce Jimmy:

“I want to welcome all of you to this 2012 annual meeting,” Warren Buffett said with a laugh.

“Cousin Warren,” Jimmy Buffett interrupted, “that’s next month.”

Coincidentally, about an hour after Jimmy’s show ended, Saturday Night Live made a Warren/Jimmy “Buffett Rule” joke during their Weekend Update segment.

Omaha fans received a special treat when Buffett debuted the song “All Night Long,” which he duets with Lionel Richie on Richie’s latest album Tuskegee.

The Omaha World Herald has a review of the show here:

“Something tells me there have been people preparing for this for a long time,” Buffett said. “It is great to be back in Omaha and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. I promise it won’t be this long before I’m back again.”

Buffett offered a lot of jokes in between songs and told about how he wrote his tunes. He also made lots of references to “cousin Warren,” eating at Piccolo Pete’s and the stormy weather outside both between songs and by subbing Omaha-friendly lyrics during some songs.

The fans screamed and cheered every time.

I’ve never seen an artist receive that kind of open and absolute affection from a crowd.

“I’ve felt the love here for a long time,” Buffett said. “I’m glad we got to do it here tonight.”
