Jimmy Cuts Video Asking Fans To Help Haiti

Jimmy Buffett has recorded a video appeal to fans asking them to donate to the Red Cross’ relief efforts in earthquake-stricken Haiti.

Simply text “haiti” to 90999 to make a $10 donation to the American Red Cross Relief for Haiti.

In the late 70’s Jimmy wrote “African Friend” after a trip he made to Port-Au-Prince:

For the amount of shit that the Haitian people have had to endure over the centuries, they are the warmest and friendliest people I have come across in my travels. This song was written after a trip to Port-Au-Prince and a wild night in the old casino that made me feel as if I were in a Bogey movie. Those damn Bogey movies have put me in some tight spots as I’ve tried to create fact out of fiction.

Jimmy has also mentioned that the Oloffson Hotel in Port-Au-Prince is one of his favorite places to stay:

One of my favorite hotels in the whole Caribbean is in Haiti: the Oloffson in Port-au-Prince. From Lillian Hellman to Graham Greene, it has an incredible literary history. To me, it’s the Caribbean of the ’30s.

From reports on Twitter it seems the hotel has remained in intact.

Thank you, Jimmy! You know your Parrot Heads will make you proud and support this crucial effort. Even those of us from the Lawn Section! HA! We’ve enjoyed your songs from the Far Side of the World, it’s time to give back, Parrot Heads. :-) Jimmy, hope to see some video coverage of this in the summer tour! See you in Camden, NJ!

Of course jimmy asks for donations and support, but really does nothing for parrotheads anymore. Money is more important I guess. Love your music Jimmy, but no respect for you anymore. Nonetheless, God Bless Haiti and I hope everything gets better soon!

I am directly involved in the relief effort. Working with a Bahamian group, bahamashabitat.org, we are flying from Ft. Lauderdale Executive airport to a staging warehouse in Nassau, then to small airports in Haiti, Cap Hatian, Gonaives, Cayes. No donation goes into an unnamed warehouse in Opa Locka, no government or miltary touches it, it all goes directly to doctors on the ground, where it is needed most. They need medical supplies badly. One pilot I talked to mentioned he saw a man with a badly broken leg. Splinted with re-bar, stabilized with Bondo. Fuel is a huge problem. The airport here is making avgas available for 2.00 per gallon, but it is 5.65 in Nassau. These planes burn 14 to 40 gallons per hour. Please go to the website and kick in something. Remember, this goes directly where the need is greatest. Good people, doing good things. Thanks. Chuck Hanlon-954-530-7189. cwhanlon@comcast,net
