Seaplane Flight with Buffett Auctioned for Charity

A seaplane flight with Jimmy was auctioned off on Wednesday night for charity, according to the Wall Street Journal article “New York Glitz — to Help Schools.”

It’s known as the Hedge Fund Prom. Beyonce sang, Jay-Z rapped, and Jon Stewart cracked jokes.

The annual Robin Hood Foundation gala, held Wednesday night, is widely considered the most extravagant event of the New York City charity season, pairing Wall Street money and Hollywood glitz. The gathering of hedge-fund founders, media executives and other A-list players raised $48 million to fight poverty in New York City.

Among the prizes: $650,000 for 10 power lunches for two with a series of celebrity executives. Also on the auction block: lessons with surfer Kelly Slater, a flight to the Hamptons or Martha’s Vineyard with Jimmy Buffett on his sea plane, and an evening at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, N.J. for 500.

Buffett to Play Two Texas Shows for Friedman Campaign

According to the Dallas Star-Telegram, Jimmy Buffett will play two shows in Texas to benefit Kinky Friedman’s gubernatorial campaign.

Kinky Friedman, the wisecracking humorist running for governor, said Wednesday he will campaign with help from ex-wrestler and former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura and island-hopping musician Jimmy Buffett.

Ventura recently agreed to join Friedman on a college tour to woo young voters in September, and Buffett will play two Texas concerts to benefit the campaign, said a Friedman spokeswoman.

Friedman said Buffett had called and agreed to help raise money. Buffett did it on the condition that if elected, Friedman give him the Gulf Coast city of Port Aransas, the candidate joked.

Details of Buffett’s Friedman concerts weren’t released.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Concert Review

John Young of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has written a review of Buffett’s Tuesday night concert:

Performing at the Post-Gazette Pavilion Tuesday night, Jimmy Buffett warned parents who brought their children to the show that he was about to play his raunchy chestnut “Why Don’t We Get Drunk (and Screw).” Except Buffett introduced the tune as “Why Don’t We Get Lunch (at School).” And sang that revised refrain throughout the song.

Even as Buffett hyped “Hoot” by performing the soundtrack song “Floridays” and running a between-set video of the film’s “Good Guys Win,” he couldn’t resist trumpeting what he felt was a subversive musical move. He noted that his cover of “Werewolves of London” is “only in the movie for about 20 seconds,” but felt that placing a cover of Warren Zevon’s great surreal hit in a film for children proved a triumph of sorts.
