Study on Parrotheads

Apparently a couple of researchers did a study on parrotheads. I’m going to try to find out some more on this topic, but here’s what there is right now on it, found in the Washington Post:

“Parrotheads in Margaritaville: Fan Practice, Oppositional Culture, and Embedded Cultural Resistance in Buffett Fandom,” by John Mihelich and John Papineau. Journal of Popular Music Studies, Vol. 17, No. 2.

Two University of Idaho sociologists study Jimmy Buffett fans and find they’d rather be wastin’ away in Margaritaville than doing just about anything else, but some view “Corporitaville” — the singer’s ever-expanding business empire — with contempt.

Live Daily has an article on the announcement of Jimmy’s spring tour dates:

Get ready, Parrottheads, for your leader has begun rolling out the itinerary for his 2006 roadwork.

So far, Buffett has confirmed April stops in Phoenix; Irvine, CA; the San Francisco area; and Dallas. Details are included below; ticket on-sale information hasn’t been announced.

Also the Houston Chronicle has a small blurb:

Jimmy Buffett has started announcing spring tour dates on his www.margaritaville.com Web site. So far, he’s playing outdoor amphitheaters in California and Texas — including an April 28 concert at the Smirnoff Music Centre in Dallas. So far, nothing for Houston. But don’t be surprised if he’s looking at a surprising venue here.

The Mercury News has an article on American Luge Olympian Tony Benshoof:

Jimmy Buffett’s famous tropical inoccupation is coming in handy up here in the frozen Italian Alps.

The music of Key West’s iconic, singing beach bum has been part of Tony Benshoof’s luge training since he was turned on to his music 11 years ago. On Saturday, the White Bear Lake, Minn., resident moved closer than ever to the pinnacle of his career – an Olympic medal.

And Buffett was there with him. Benshoof arrived at the media village last week to find a surprise package in his room. It contained a videotaped message of good luck from Buffett, who had read about Benshoof’s adoration in a newspaper.

Jimmy traveled to Jamaica last week to visit with the Jamaican Dog Sled Team, of which he is a sponsor.

“What is it about this island’s infatuation with the cold?” exclaimed Jimmy, “I missed out on the bobsled years – I don’t intend to miss out on this one. Besides, I can’t wait to yell “Mush Mon” in support of our team”.

A Margaritaville is planned to open February 25th at the Carnival Cruise Ship Pier on Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

From the LA Times:

The restaurant, Margaritaville, part of the Jimmy Buffett chain, will open as a bar and later add food service, said Giora Israel, Carnival’s vice president of strategic planning.

From MargaritavilleCaribbean.com:

“We’re expanding at Turks and Caicos, building a Margaritaville at the Carnival Cruise Ship Pier and that opens in February. It will be our biggest ever and will be able to seat 700 people, the construction in Cayman Islands is half-way finished and will open in early May.” commented CEO Mr. Brian Jardim.

The Turks restaurant will be drinks-only until June, when it begins full-service.
