From Billboard:

New York’s Madison Square Garden will be the site of a Sept. 20 benefit for victims of Hurricane Katrina, dubbed “From the Big Apple to the Big Easy.” The show will pair a variety of top acts with some of New Orleans’ most notable musicians, including Fats Domino and Allen Toussaint, who were rescued just days ago from the devastated city.

Among the artists set to appear are Elton John, Jimmy Buffett, Rod Stewart, Stevie Nicks, Lenny Kravitz, Bette Midler, John Fogerty, Loggins & Mussina and Earth, Wind & Fire. New Orleans will be represented by the Neville Brothers, the Original Meters and the Dirty Dozen and Rebirth Brass Bands.

In addition to underwriting the show, Madison Square Garden will donate $1 million to Katrina-related fundraising efforts. All proceeds from the event will benefit like-minded causes. Tickets go on sale Sept. 13.

Singer Jimmy Buffett is donating 25-thousand dollars to the Hawaii Chapter of the American Red Cross Thursday. Buffett has long been a fan of Hawaii and dreamed for decades of performing a benefit concert in Diamond Head Crater. He decided instead to help out the Red Cross with a donation.

Buffett performed at the Aloha Stadium in 1979 and most recently appeared at the Waikiki Shell in April. He called the donation a small payback for all of the aloha spirit he has received in the Aloha State.

Billboard has an article about Buffett’s Wrigley shows entitled “Buffett Winds Down Tour At Wrigley Field”.

Midway through yesterday’s two-and-a-half-hour show, Buffett, a longtime Cubs fan, said the idea was hatched appropriately enough “in a bar about seven years ago,” and thanked the city of Chicago and the Cubs for making it happen.

A native of the Gulf Coast, Buffett dedicated a sizeable portion of his set to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, signing a Cubs jersey at the front of the show and announcing that it would be auctioned off on eBay with the proceeds going to the Red Cross.

Crowds totaled over 87,000 for the two sold-out performances. “And you never know,” Buffett smirked at the end of the afternoon, “We might just do it again.”
