Cayman Margaritaville off of probation
submitted 12/25/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.

The The Liquor Licensing Board for the Cayman Islands has ruled that the Margaritaville Cafe on Grand Cayman is no longer on probation. The ruling came at the Board's quarterly meeting on Thursday. In September, the cafe was placed on probation after members of the Elmslie Memorial United Church, located next door to Margaritaville, complained that loud noise and public drunkenness was disrupting church activities.
Elmslie’s John MacMillan said the church was satisfied with the steps the venue’s management had since taken to curtail noise.
“We have taken a number of steps to become better neighbors and we have met a number of times with the church’s board,” explained Margaritaville Manager Arthur Screaton.
This has included telling DJs performing at the venue to keep music to lower levels. The venue now ensures that the large doors on its balcony are closed while DJs are performing. Speakers on the balcony are also turned off when there is entertainment inside, Mr. Screaton explained.
Mrs. Bodden–Smatt said she had recently visited the venue and noted the impressive changes management had made. “I commend you for that,” she said.
Police also confirmed they had had no complaints about the venue since it was placed on probation.

JB plays surprise set in New Orleans

This past weekend, Jimmy Buffett was at the bar d.b.a. on Frenchman Street when he took to the stage and performed a few songs. Jacob Brooks of The Bogalusa Daily News writes about the experience:
Around midnight or so, I was feeling the music, dancing, having a good time. I noticed this guy right in front of me. He was an older gentleman, and I didn't recognize him at first.
Soon, the band took a little break, but when they came back on, the older gentleman who was right in front of me was on stage playing guitar and singing. It was Jimmy Buffett.
He sung "No woman, no cry," a Bob Marley song, and a few others before turning the stage over back to the band.
When he was on stage, he said he loved New Orleans, which he called the "Capital of the Caribbean." When people in the audience realized it was him, the cell phone cameras came out and weren't put away until Buffett left the bar.

Buffett again one of the top tours of the year
submitted 12/5/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
Stubhub has released its second annual report on concert ticket sales activity, and Buffett's 2007 Bama Breeze Tour did very well, despite having far fewer dates than most top performing tours.
Buffett placed 7th on the list of the Top 10 Selling Tours of 2007 (based on total dollar volume of tickets sold), even though he only played 25 national dates, compared to an average of 48 dates for the other 9 tours on the list. In 2006, Buffett ranked number 5 on the Stubhub list.
The average ticket price for a Bama Breeze show was $136, which did not even place on the list of the Top 10 Highest Average Tour Ticket Prices. The highest was Celine Dion with $347, and number 10 on the list was Michael Buble at $195.
Comparing the 2007 Bama Breeze Tour with the 2006 Party At The End Of The World Tour, Stubhub notes that Buffett saw a 30% increase in actual number of tickets sold for 2007, and a 34% increase in total gross sales.
One interesting note that Stubhub mentions: For the second consecutive year, six of StubHub's Top 10 Selling Tours of 2007 also toured in 1986 or prior (The Police, Bruce Springsteen, Van Halen, Jimmy Buffett, Bon Jovi, Genesis)

Navy Admiral cites Buffett in China criticism

Navy Admiral Timothy J. Keating, the head of U.S. Pacific Command, used a Jimmy Buffett reference on Tuesday while criticizing China for refusing to allow U.S. warships to take refuge from a storm in Hong Kong.
Adm. Timothy J. Keating, the head of U.S. Pacific Command, and Adm. Gary Roughead, the chief of naval operations, both took sharp exception to the Chinese government's refusal to allow the minesweepers to come into port when threatened by rough seas.
"As someone who has been going to sea all my life, if there is one tenet that we observe it's when somebody is in need you provide [assistance] and you sort it out later," Roughead said.
"This is, kind of, an unwritten law amongst seamen, that if someone is in need, regardless of genus, phylum or species, you let them come in; you give them safe harbor," Keating said. "Jimmy Buffett has songs about it, for crying out loud."

McAnally inducted into Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame
submitted 10/15/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
Mac McAnally, longtime Coral Reefer Band member, producer, and songwriter was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame last night. Jimmy Buffett was in attendance and did the induction of Mac. The Tennessean covered the ceremony: "It's writers' turn to be honored for songs"
At night's end, Buffett inducted his friend, sometimes-producer and Coral Reefer band member McAnally into the Hall. McAnally's hits include Ricky Van Shelton's "Crime Of Passion," Alabama's "Old Flame" and Sawyer Brown's "All These Years." "I wake up every day with a song in my heart, and then I try to get it (out there)," McAnally said. "I am taken aback with this honor."
Mac wrote or co-wrote multiple songs that Buffett has recorded, including "It's My Job," and "When The Coast Is Clear." Perhaps Mac's most famous songs that he has written are the Sawyer Brown hits "All These Years" and "Cafe Down On The Corner." He also wrote "Back Where I Come From," a song that Kenny Chesney recorded and has made a staple at his shows.

Work halted on Jimmy's grandfather's shipwreck

The Press-Register has an article on Buffett's grandfather's shipwreck in Mobile:
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Thursday ordered a condo developer to stop digging up the sunken remains of a four-masted schooner once captained by the grandfather of singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett.
The decaying wooden hulk is that of the Chiquimula, a longtime Mobile Bay-area landmark, which was commanded for many years by Capt. James Buffett, a highly regarded Gulf Coast master mariner.
The vessel's charred hull, buried for more than 50 years beside the shore of Blakeley River near the Causeway, lies in the way of plans for boat slips at Shellbank Landing, a planned 57-unit condominium project.
Last week, a diving contractor hired by real estate developer Dent Boykin and his business partners began using a high-pressure pump to uncover the underwater remains of what Boykin thought was a vessel singer Jimmy Buffett mentions in a song and in a book.

Article compares Buffett and Kenny Chesney
submitted 10/11/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
The Hamptons.com has an article comparing Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Chesney, entitled "Buffett and Chesney: Flip-Floppers and Five O'Clock "
One key element in the music of both Chesney and Buffett is the lifestyle they exude from the music and the stage. Buffett played the entire concert in t-shirt, yellow shorts and no shoes. Chesney wore flip-flops, forgoing the traditional Country Music staple footwear, boots. These are the guys you want around in the Keys (or on a beach in the Hamptons), with money to spend and time to spare. The second factor, only from a male perspective, is the quality of female fans that both of these guys attract. I have yet to see that many bikini tops, halter tops, and topless tops in the middle of New York City before.

Buffett sues Six Flags theme parks
submitted 10/2/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.

Jimmy Buffett is suing Six Flags theme parks over a name dispute:
Buffett claims the Six Flags's Carrothead Club infringes his trademark on Parrotheads, a name associated with his Hawaiian-shirt-wearing devotees. The move has stunned Six Flags, responsible for 20 theme parks.
Representative Wendy Goldberg tells New York gossip column PageSix.com, "I'm not sure how the concept of children in foam carrot hats is going to be confused with significantly older Hawaiian shirt-wearing, margarita-swilling Parrotheads. Clearly imitation wasn't what we had in mind!"

Freelance writer Gary Logan writes a piece for the Washington Post entitled "Returning to Margaritaville." The natives are restless in Cayman
submitted 9/28/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
According to Cayman Net News, the Margaritaville Cafe on Grand Cayman that opened in 2006 recently had its liquor license put on probation because of complaints from a neighboring church.
Elmslie Memorial United Church objected to the renewal of Margaritaville’s licenses claiming the establishment is “a bad influence” and that the owners, Dart Realty, should apply the same principles here that they apply to the upscale Camana Bay development.
Renard Moxam, Managing Director of Island Companies, and part-owner of Margaritaville, responded that there were no objections to the initial application by Margaritaville, and that to be asked to modify the license was problematic. Margaritaville has been in operation for over a year, and apart from a couple of incidents that were acted upon, the establishment felt there are no grounds for objections.

Article on Buffett honoring Flora-Bama owner
submitted 9/27/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
The Alabama Press-Register has an article on Buffett honoring the owner of the gulf coast bar The Flora-Bama at one of the Madison Square Garden shows: "Buffett honors Gilchrist; benefit set for Joiner"
When Jimmy Buffett opened last year's "Take the Weather with You" album with the song "Bama Breeze," an ode to a fondly remembered coastal roadhouse, many took it as a thinly veiled tribute to the famed Flora-Bama Lounge & Package on the Alabama-Florida state line.
It's probably fair to say that Buffett was deliberate in sending a more general message. When he used the Katrina-damaged Fire Dog Saloon in Bay St. Louis, Miss., as the site of the song's video, he also worked in a theme of destruction and recovery that was relevant to life all along the Gulf Coast.
But Buffett was more direct in tipping his hat last week during a concert in New York City's Madison Square Garden. Flora-Bama owner Joe Gilchrist was in the crowd, along with a small group of friends with Gulf Coast ties, and Buffett singled both Gilchrist and the Flora-Bama out by name as sources of inspiration.

Jimmy Buffett spent some time this past weekend volunteering in Montauk with Surfers Healing, a organization created specifically to take autistic children out of their mysterious shells, and to turn a beach here, a beach there, into a sanctuary of shared understanding for moms and dads who most days struggle alone to cope with their challenged children in the “normal” world.
“It’s the motion of the ocean,” was how the singer Jimmy Buffett put it. Mr. Buffett, a surfer himself, showed up to volunteer on Saturday afternoon. Later that evening, he performed for parents and volunteers at the Sunset Saloon on Fort Pond Bay in Montauk.

Over the weekend, Jimmy Buffett attended a celebrity-studded Labor Day party at Bon Jovi's Long Island, New York home, according to a couple articles:
The New York Post writes:
Guests at Bon Jovi's Labor Day party were screaming and cheering when an impromptu band made up of Billy Joel (below) on piano, Jimmy Buffett on guitar and Jon Bon Jovi, Paul McCartney and Pink Floyd great Roger Waters on vocals took the stage.
The rock legends played Bon Jovi and Beatle tunes, along with many of Billy's own songs.

The Toronto Star interviews Buffett
submitted 9/1/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.

The Toronto Star has a great interview with Buffett: "The complicated uncomplicated life of Jimmy Buffett"
I didn't get spoiled by success," he chuckled. "I loved the beach too much, I worked in a bar, I did some busking ... finally I was lucky to find something in Key West that turned it around."
The thing he found was "Margaritaville," the song to which Buffett's name will forever be linked, the "what-me-worry?" plaint of a loser bathing his wounds in alcohol and the bucolic haze of a sun-drenched paradise.
"I wrote that song in six minutes," he said, marvelling at its lasting cultural effects. "But I'm not the first person to sell escapism, and I had no idea that it would start something as big as the Parrothead movement."

Review of the Mohegan Sun show

The Republican has a review of Thursday night's show at the Mohegan Sun Casino: "Lots of merriment, Jimmy Buffett style"
On a day of revelry that included an induction into the Mohegan Sun Walk of Fame, Jimmy Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band contributed to the contrived revelry with a two-hour performance on the casino's Arena stage.
Mohegan Sun has become a regular summer stop on Buffett's touring itinerary and as much as any other traveling artist his familiarity with the nooks and crannies of New England's shoreline almost make him a native son.
The pied-piper of public inebriation, Buffett set up his stage to resemble the Bama Breeze Saloon and set out to engage the thousands of fans who had shown up with standard Buffett paraphernalia; stuffed parrots, grass skirts, and glasses filled with frozen beverages.

Jimmy Buffett called Radio Margaritaville's program director/afternoon DJ Steve Huntington from Highway 101, near Beullton, California today, while making a solo road trip to Santa Cruz, with surfboards on the roof and his bike tied to the
rear of his rented white VW van. He was retracing steps from his days working the clubs of the California coast.
Buffett discussed getting a stand up paddle surfing lesson from surf god Laird Hamilton in San Onofre, playing Tinley/Chicago with Sonny Landreth who will be there for a blues festival.
He mentioned his trip to Hawaii in October, and a trip "Down Under" presumably to Australia.
He also discussed taking a video crew to the spot in Tahiti where he wrote "One Particular Harbour".

Article on Buffett's business empire
submitted 7/6/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
The International Herald Tribune has a good article on Jimmy Buffett's business empire: "Spotlight: Margaritaville is Jimmy Buffett's empire"
Buffett said he owed much of his business acumen to the early days of his career, when, as a reporter for Billboard, the music magazine, he learned that a knowledge of business was a necessity for performing artists. The reason, he said, was that the music industry was not structured to meet the artist's best interests.
He has also taken a page out of the book of another Buffett: Warren, the billionaire investor and a longtime friend. Jimmy Buffett said he valued the concept of "management in place" that he learned from watching Berkshire Hathaway: Hire competent people, then "just let them do it."

Time's Readers ask Jimmy 10 questions
submitted 7/5/07 by Jahfin.
Post or View Comments |
Time Magazine asked their readers for 10 questions to ask Jimmy Buffett. Here are a couple of them:
Q: Is it still fun? Be honest.
A:Yeah. I wouldn't do it if it wasn't fun. You know, I just played a show in Virginia where 26,000 people stood in the rain to hear us. That makes a mark on you. We're showing people how, in a pretty crazy and whacked-out, dangerous world, you can still have fun.
Q: After all your success, what's left?
A: When it is all said and done, I am going to teach. There comes a point where you want to share your wisdom if you get to do the things I've done. Of course, if you want to see me teach, I don't think I will be at Fargo in February. You might have to find me at the University of Hawaii.

Jimmy interviewed in USA Today
submitted 6/30/07 by jollymon345.
Post or View Comments |
USA Today's Lifeline Live caught up with Jimmy after Thursday night's show in Bristow, Virginia:
After a concert for 400 earlier this month in Paris - his first there, Jimmy Buffett says he's looking to do more unusual, smaller venues just like it. "I'm going to be more adventurous," he said. With the usual twinkle in his eye, Buffett, 60, mentioned he's trying to line up a gig on Easter Island in the South Pacific near the big statues there.
In the wake of Hoot, his last movie which didn't do well at the box office, Buffett says he'll stay out of filmmaking for awhile. "It's done too much by committee." Instead, look for a new Buffett novel come November. The title: Swine Not, about a pig in Manhattan. In the meantime, he'll be heading to his next "board meeting" - surfboard, that is. And don't worry, he added, he'll still keep his "summer job" - doing the big barefoot concerts his Parrothead fans love. "I'm not retiring."

Jimmy Buffett entertained Wal-Mart shareholders again this year at their annual meeting. Blogger Brian White describes the event for BloggingStocks:
When I attended the most recent Wal-Mart shareholder meeting, I was quite amazed at the overall feel of the event. It did not feel like a shareholder meeting at all, but more like an entertainment venue. The amount of celebrities brought in before the meeting's day and during the meeting itself was quite impressive. From Jimmy Buffett to recent American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, there was no shortage of entertainment talent.

Rolling Stone has an interview with several different acts. They ask Jimmy three questions:
Do you ever get sick of the hits?
Anything new this year?
Any chance the new material could displace any of the "Big Eight"?
In the last question, Jimmy explains why "Why Don't We Get Drunk" hasn't been played this year:
It was an accident, because I plugged some stuff in, and when I finished the show, I went, "Oh, my God, we didn't do 'Get Drunk and Screw,' " which you figure in Texas is a must. Well, nobody yelled or threw anything, so we didn't do it the whole tour.

Warren Buffett and Jimmy aren't related afterall
submitted 5/28/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
It turns out that Jimmy Buffett and Warren Buffett aren't related afterall. Fortune magazine has an article on the issue: "The Buffett mystery"
About two months ago Warren and Jimmy submitted DNA to 23andMe (an ancestry firm started by Google founder Sergey Brin and his wife, Anne Wojcicki.)
When the results came back a month later, Wojcicki - a 33-year-old Yale grad and former health-care industry analyst - and her associate Joanna Mountain called Warren from 23andMe's offices, just half a mile from Google's Mountain View, Calif., campus, and broke the news that he need not include Jimmy in his will. In fact, "I'm as closely related to you as Jimmy is," said Mountain, the head of 23andMe's ancestry product line and a former professor of anthropological genetics at Stanford.
As it turns out, Jimmy and Warren do have common ancestors, but you have to go back more than 10,000 years to find them. That's before surnames, folks. "Bottom line: We're not related," Warren wrote to his sister Doris, the family genealogist, who opened this whole can of worms many years ago.

Article on Buffett's co-author Helen Bransford
submitted 5/24/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
The East Hampton Star has an article on Helen Bransford, illustrator and co-author with Jimmy on his next book "Swine Not?", due out November 27th:
“Swine Not” follows the adventures of Rumpy the pig and friends, including the pigeolantes (pigeon vigilantes) who “watch the airspace in the city, to prevent animals from falling out windows.” Like Forky, Rumpy is forced to live undercover in an apartment, only venturing outside when well disguised as a dog or when wearing her favorite pink wig.
“I was staying at Jane and Jimmy’s,” she said, referring to Mr. Buffett and his wife. “Jimmy said, ‘Let me read it, and took it on his sailboat overnight.’ The next day he told me he wanted to edit it and add layers. He got into it. Took it to a fantastic level. He likes animals.” She said it was originally meant to be a children’s book, and probably still was, although it was one that should appeal to easily amused adults.

Jimmy Buffett and Harrah's Entertainment announced on Tuesday plans for Margaritaville Casino & Resort on the shores of Biloxi, Mississippi.
The Margaritaville project is expected to cost more than $700 million, representing the single largest investment in Mississippi since Hurricane Katrina, Harrah’s announced in a statement.
“I have always considered myself a “Gulf Coast kid,” Buffet said in a statement released by Harrah’s. “I was born there, grew up there and jumped on a stage for the first time there, before hitting the road. I have seen the world, traveled to distant shores, written a few songs and lived a few tall tales along the way, and now it is good to be coming back home.“
Margaritaville Casino & Resort will be developed on 46 acres of land south of U.S. 90 in Biloxi on the site formerly occupied by Grand Casino and Casino Magic. With a projected development start date of summer 2007, the Margaritaville Casino & Resort should be completed by spring 2010.

Steve Goodman profiled in new book
submitted 5/8/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
West Seattle author Clay Eals spent the past four years researching and writing a book called "Steve Goodman: Facing the Music."
A songwriter and performer in the 1970s and early '80s, Goodman's most famous song was "City of New Orleans," which was made into a hit by Arlo Guthrie. A lyric from the song was the inspiration for the name of the TV program "Good Morning America."
Goodman also wrote "Banana Republics" and "This Hotel Room" for Jimmy Buffett.
Eals, a North Admiral resident and former editor of the West Seattle Herald, interviewed more than 1,100 people for the book. Among them were a score of musicians including Jackson Browne, Kris Kristofferson, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Randy Newman, Pete Seeger, Doc Watson and Loudon Wainwright III.
Goodman opened 200 times for comedian Steve Martin, who wrote that it took only about 30 seconds for Goodman to capture an audience.

The chief "parrothead" joked that as Warren's distant cousin, he was taking over for the 76-year-old billionaire chairman and chief executive.
"Since blood is thicker than water, I'm your new chairman," the singer said.
Then Jimmy Buffett sang a version of his hit song "Margaritaville" that had been rewritten to honor Berkshire Hathaway and its companies.

The Dallas Morning News has a review of Buffett's show in Frisco, Texas on Saturday night: "Buffett's Frisco concert full of the fun"
 Jason Janik / DMN |
As he has thousands of times in thousands of cities, Mr. Buffett wowed the crowd at Pizza Hut Park with a nearly three-hour show that made everyone feel they were well into happy hour.
So annoying at baseball games, beach balls are anything but at a Buffett concert. They rain through the air by the hundreds, as grown-ups wearing parrot noses and parrot heads, flowered shirts, hula skirts and pirate suits sashay and dance with smiles on their faces as the graying, balding maestro sings of "Growing Older But Not Up."

Buffett in New Orleans to Honor Ed Bradley
submitted 4/27/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
Jimmy Buffett was at Jazz Fest in New Orleans today to take part in a tribute to the late Ed Bradley.
Bradley, who died in November, had wanted to be remembered at the festival with a “second line” parade, so-called because watchers often fall in to form a second line of paraders.
Quint Davis introduced singer Jimmy Buffett as the person who first brought Bradley to the festival in the 1980s, and the first to pull him up on a stage and hand him a tambourine.
“Bless you, Father, for bringing us a really bad tambourine player but a great friend,” Buffett said Friday.
Buffett took credit for giving Bradley the nickname “Teddy Badly.” About 45 of Bradley’s friends participating in the parade wore small green pins with the name “Teddy” printed on them.

Article on the upcoming Houston show
submitted 4/19/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
The Houston Chronicle has an article on what it took to get Buffett to come to Minute Maid Park for a show.
Jimmy Buffett's concert Saturday night at Minute Maid Park took six months to negotiate, but the ball really started rolling three years ago when the Houston Astros hired Jay Lucas to run their communications department.
Astros president of business operations Pam Gardner "mentioned that the team was interested in getting a show or two at Minute Maid," Lucas said. "The first person I thought of was Jimmy Buffett. He hadn't played Houston in a long time. When you check out the way he packs concerts all over the country, I figured if you're looking for someone to play here, he's the one."
Lucas called Buffett's management and said, "We'd like to have Jimmy play Minute Maid Park. What do we have to do to get him here?"
...While Buffett had played several baseball stadiums in the past, including Wrigley Field in Chicago and Fenway Park in Boston, he was not looking to do a baseball stadium this year.
This article is a great read, especially for those of you who will be attending the show. Read the entire article.

Reg Henry, columnist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, writes a column on Jimmy Buffett and Parrotheads: "The parrotheads are not the silly ones"
Unlike many who have become famous, the singer of catchy escapist tunes appears not to have made himself into the back end of a horse. On the other hand, his many fans arguably do make spectacles of themselves, as optometrists do at their office parties. In the case of the Jimmy Buffett fans, they have this thing for putting parrots on their heads.

Ralph MacDonald: TAIT (Part 3)
submitted 4/3/07 by Bwana Paul.
Post or View Comments |
Time After Island Time welcomes back the World's Foremost Precussion player, Ralph MacDonald for the third and final part on this series. This episode is the most important, as we get to really know Ralph MacDonald and his philosophy. We talk about the inspiration behind some of his songs and also about one that Buffett sang on Club Trini Late Night Live, "Come On In."
Mr. MacDonald talks about what he likes to do when not on the road, the importance of physical fitness and being mindful of one's health. He talks about music's role as a language that everyone can understand. Mr. MacDonald really opens up on this episode, in a very serious way, but at other times light-hearted. Get a first-hand look into not only Ralph MacDonald the songwriter, producer, and performer, but also Ralph MacDonald the man. I learned a lot more from Ralph, than about music.
Hear Ralph's solo music, his compositions he wrote as a youngster for Harry Belafonte, and some covered by other musicians. Also hear a rarer cut of Jimmy, Ralph and the Reefers jammin' at a rehearsal.

Gillette Stadium Tailgating to Start Later
submitted 3/29/07 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
The Sun Chronicle has an article on tailgating at September's Gillette Stadium shows: "Margaritaville opens a little later"
Jimmy Buffett fans expecting to tailgate to his Gillette Stadium debut concerts in the morning won't be welcome in Margaritaville. The Gillette parking lots won't open until 3:30 p.m., four hours before showtime, selectmen said Tuesday night.
Selectmen voted to license the two sold-out shows, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, and Saturday, Sept. 8. Selectmen voted after discussing the parking issues with Police Chief Edward O'Leary, stadium official Dan Murphy and Stadium Advisory Committee Chairman George Bell II.
"I think we've gone out of our way," Selectmen Vice Chairman James Thrasher said. "The public understands we're not licensing the lots to open until 3:30 p.m."
Bell said the parking lots might need to open early because "this is a crowd that arrives really early, potentially early morning."

New State Song For Florida?
submitted 3/9/07 by UtahPH.
Post or View Comments |
Lauren Ritchie of the Orlando Sentinel has written a commentary suggesting that Buffett is the perfect artist for a new Florida state song:
A movement is afoot in the Florida Legislature this year to change
the state song, "The Swanee River (Old Folks at Home)," written in
1851 by Pennsylvanian Stephen C. Foster.
Buffett is the only artist in America who captures us -- or at least
what we want to be. His easygoing calypso rhythms infused with steel
drums and trumpet are the ticket to paradise. He throws in an
occasional country tune and mixes it all with sweet ballads.
Buffett sings one wistful ballad that would make a lovely
Florida state song. It's called "I Have Found Me a Home." Several
stanzas hearken back to what Florida was before the boom and the
tourists hit.

Pay Big Bucks To Party At Minute Maid Park

Post or View Comments |
For the first time ever, Minute Maid Park will allow tailgating parties when Buffett performs at the ballpark April 21. The Houston Chronicle has an article on it: "Buffett fans get to party"
The "plocking," as Buffett fans call their parties, will be confined to Parking Lots B and C on the west side of the stadium.
Partying won't be cheap. Lot B will be for cars and trucks, at $50 a space. If you're expecting lots of friends, you might have to buy extra spots, one for your car and three for your friends in hula skirts doing belly-buster high dives into a blow-up kiddie pool. You must contain your party to the spaces you purchase.
Lot C will be for RV vehicles, $175 per RV. There are only 48 spots available.
Parking lots will open at noon. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Observe Texas' drinking laws. Don't act like an idiot. No tailgating will be allowed after the show. Go home.

The Orlando Sentinel has a review of Thursday night's concert at the Amway Arena in Orlando, Florida: "Buffett pleases, which isn't surprising"
There aren't too many surprises at a Jimmy Buffett concert anymore, but the people in the grass skirts and feathered headgear keep coming.
Near the end of his generous, highly spirited concert on Thursday at the Amway Arena, Buffett did a nice job of explaining the reason as he offered his own thanks for such enduring fan adulation.
"I always liked coming here," Buffett said of Orlando. "I know what I'm gonna get."

Wesley Cook Radio Special Airs Worldwide
submitted 1/19/07 by Bwana Paul.
Post or View Comments |
The Time After Island Time Radio Program is very proud to present Part One of a 2-part special on Singer, Songwriter, Guitarist, Recording Artist and sometime actor Wesley Cook. Wesley Cook's cover of "He Went to Paris," has lead some music fans to say..."Who was that?" The single debuted first on a Time After Island Time in commemoration of Jimmy Buffett's Sixtieth Birthday.
SO WHO IS WESLEY COOK? What is unique about Wesley Cook is his profoundly deep and well-constructed lyrics. The variety of music he composes is more diverse than most artists you will ever encounter. Growing up in foreign countries, he captured many influences from around the world. But you will find some of his songs to be folk, some blues, some rock, and a healthy dose of beautiful ballads. His depth of thinking and writing, as well as ambition leaves some a bit surprised when they find out how young he is. Watch out for Wesley- he’s going to be big.
We welcome him on TAIT for a very intimate conversation and some unplugged acoustic guitar playing and singing. Be prepared to hear a troubadour you will not soon forget! Tune in from anywhere in the world via Radio JimmyDreamz.

Neil Finn Compliments Buffett on Weather With You

Neil Finn, former front man for Crowded House, compliments Jimmy on his cover of "Weather With You" from his new album "Take The Weather With You" in an article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Still a standout is "Weather With You," which Crowded House released in 1991 and which enjoyed a new life last year as the title track of Jimmy Buffett's latest album.
"It kind of blew me away," says Neil Finn, who formed Crowded House in 1985 after the demise of his previous band, Split Enz. "I like the way he did it.
"And I like that he did it. I don't know much of his stuff, but he's obviously got a very big fan base. He does huge shows. So I'm really happy he's taken that song on. Good on him! I look forward to meeting him. I'll give him a big thank-you for certain."

What's Really on Jimmy's Cheeseburger in Paradise
submitted 1/17/07 by Jahfin.
Post or View Comments |
Ken Hoffman of the Houston Chronicle sheds light on why Buffett seemingly left out cheese on his cheeseburger in the lyrics to Cheeseburger in Paradise.
I've finally fixed a problem that has tormented me for years. How can it be a cheeseburger ... if there isn't any cheese on it? It's impossible. That's why it's always driven me crazy when I pick up a Jimmy Buffett CD or read a lyrics Web site and they've got the words wrong to Buffett's tasty song "Cheeseburger in Paradise." Even Buffett's own Web site, www.margaritaville.com, had the words wrong.
In the 1978 hit, Buffett plainly describes the blueprint for his favorite cheeseburger. A big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat. Heaven on Earth with an onion slice. I like mine with lettuce and tomato, Heinz 57, French fried potatoes, a big kosher pickle and, a cold draft beer. There's one more line that isn't so plain. For three decades, Buffett fans, even the most devoted Parrotheads, thought he was singing . . .
Medium rare with mustard be nice.
Condimentally speaking, they're all wrong: The backs of his CDs, the Web sites, and especially the guy sitting next to me.
Buffett is a words guy. He wouldn't miss a critical ingredient like that. He's saying, "Medium rare with Muenster be nice." Muenster cheese. Now you've got a cheeseburger.
How do I know he's saying "Muenster"? One of my first newspaper assignments was to cover Buffett recording an album in Miami. During a break, I asked him, "Why on Earth do you put mustard on a cheeseburger?"
He said,"I don't."
But you say mustard.
" I do? Where?"
"In 'Cheeseburger,' you say medium rare with mustard."
"No, I don't. It's Muenster."
So there ... from Buffett himself.
Then I did something that I've never done before -- I demanded a retraction. It felt good to be on the other side for once.
About an hour later, I got an e-mail from Coleman Sisson, Buffett's No. 1 computer wizard, lord master of www.margaritaville.com.
"We corrected the lyrics page. Thanks. Glad to know you're still out there."

Seals Find a Friend in Margaritaville
submitted 12/21/06 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.

Jimmy Buffett recently issued a letter declaring that his Margaritaville Cafes will not purchase or serve Canadian seafood products until the Canadian government ends the commercial seal hunt permanently.
I do not look at this as one nation telling another how to best manage its affairs. I view it as an effort to make humans more humane in the way they manage the planet. We do not own the earth. We are landlords and we simply need to do a better job, for all creatures on this earth.

Taylor Hicks Wants Fans Like Parrotheads
submitted 12/11/06 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
American Idol winner Taylor Hicks wants to have the same sort of following that Jimmy Buffett has. He explains in an MTV News article:
Hicks kicked off a press tour last week and plans to launch a full trek at the end of February that will "hopefully last 10 years," he said.
And he's not entirely joking. After all, another one of his idols is road warrior Jimmy Buffett. "As a performer for so long you have this mentality of [wanting] everybody who comes to your show to be Parrotheads," Hicks explained, using the nickname given to Buffett's loyal followers. "The Parrothead mentality is like a gathering, a social event — it's not only about the music, but it's about the people you meet all over the country. That's what I strive for as a performer: to have a traveling circus of fans."

Buffett Sings National Anthem at Saints Game

Jimmy is mentioned in The Mercury News' write-up of Sunday's Saints-49ers game where he sang the national anthem:
Thanks to Reggie Bush's explosive effort, the Saints won their eighth game and are in position to not only make the playoffs but to host a game. Local favorite Jimmy Buffett sang the national anthem and was given a game ball. He gave it back to Bush and said he'd wait to get one from him in Miami - site of the Super Bowl. A preposterous idea a few weeks ago. Not so far-fetched now.

Post or View Comments |
The Palm Beach Post has a review of Tuesday night's show in West Palm Beach, Florida: "Buffett's high note honors Bradley"
It seemed a fitting tribute to a fallen musician friend: A tambourine with a flower tied to it hung from a lonely, unmanned microphone stand. But forget about a somber tribute - Jimmy Buffett wasn't having any of that.
"Some thought we should have a moment of silence," Buffett, pretty much the poster child for all things anti-somber, said Tuesday night at Sound Advice Amphitheatre. "I say, to hell with that. A night of music is more appropriate for my friend Teddy Bradley."

Ed Bradley, Close Friend of Buffett, Dies
submitted 11/9/06 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
Jimmy lost a close friend today. Ed Bradley of 60 Minutes.
Bradley is survived by his wife, Patricia Blanchet, of New York. He married
Blanchet, an artist, in 2004 at their Aspen, Colorado, home with Jimmy Buffett providing the wedding music, according to a column in the Rocky Mountain News.
He introduced Jimmy onstage at the Big Apple to the Big Easy concert at Madison Square Garden.
As a jazz afficionado and lover of musical improv, he appeared on stage at the Margaritaville Cafe in New Orleans in May '06 during Jazz Fest week. With Little Feat tackling the song on the spot, he took the mic for a sponanious rendition of his unofficial theme song...the R&B classic by the Dominoes "Sixty Minute Man" with his friend Jimmy standing nearby, beaming a grin.
Bradley, dies of Lukemia at age 65. Nov 9, 2006.
Update - From the NY Times: Buffett was with Bradley in his hospital room when he died:
Though Mr. Bradley had largely concealed his illness, he and his wife, Patricia Blanchet, had reached out in recent days to some of his closest friends — including Charlayne Hunter-Gault of National Public Radio (who traveled to his bedside from her home in South Africa) and the singer Jimmy Buffett (who rushed to New York to be with him following a concert in Hawaii).
Mr. Buffett said he told Mr. Bradley on Wednesday that “the Knicks and the Democrats won,” eliciting a smile from Mr. Bradley, who by that point could barely speak.
“I made the mistake once of letting him get onstage with my band, and he never stopped doing it,” said Mr. Buffett, who was introduced to Mr. Bradley 30 years ago in Key West, Fla., by a mutual friend, Hunter S. Thompson.
Mr. Bradley had many nicknames throughout his life, including Big Daddy, when he played defensive end and offensive tackle in the 1960s at Cheyney State College (now Cheyney University of Pennsylvania); but his favorite, Ms. Hunter-Gault and Mr. Buffett said, was Teddy Badly, which Mr. Buffett bestowed on him onstage the first time Mr. Bradley played tambourine at his side.
“Everybody in my opinion needs a little Mardi Gras in their life,” Mr. Buffett said, “and he liked to have a little more than the average person on occasion.”
“He was such a great journalist,” Mr. Buffett added, “but he still knew how to have a good time.”

Jimmy Buffett was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall Of Fame on Sunday night during a ceremony at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel.
Sunday night, duo Big & Rich joined Marshall Chapman, Buzz Cason and Don Light in honoring Buffett.
Buffett got up after the speech and musical tribute, by which time Light, his old friend and agent, had already put his honor into perspective: "This is not the last Hall of Fame into which he will be inducted, but I think it's really appropriate that it's the first."
|
For his part, Buffett offered good humor along with appreciation. After Big & Rich sang "Margaritaville," Buffett joked, "Hugh Prestwood gets Trisha Yearwood and I get these clowns." Later Buffett said, "I never got in it to become big and rich, but, what the . . . , it happened."

First Day Sales Numbers For The New Album
submitted 10/11/06 by Columbus Fins.
Post or View Comments |
It doesn't look like Jimmy is going to repeat the magic of debuting at No. 1 with his new album Take The Weather With You.
Projections based on first day sales have the album moving about 100,000 copies. License To Chill debuted at No. 1 on sales of about 239,000 copies.
Right now it looks like Buffett will be outpaced by Rod Stewart and Lloyd Banks. Each of those albums are projected to sell about 160,000 to 165,000 copies.
Factor in Evanescence who moved 400,000 copies of their new disc last week. It is highly unlikely that they'll sell that many again this week and will probably struggle to retain No. 1 next week.
These numbers are based on early reports from retailers. The numbers could change slightly, though it is unlikely the change would be enough to push Buffett into the hunt for No. 1.
FYI - these are actual sales, not shipments. Actual sales (people buying the CD) are used to determine the charts like Billboard's album chart. Shipments are used to determine RIAA's certificatoins (Gold and Platinum, for instance). So, Jimmy could sell 245,000 copies and still be certified Gold if 500,000 discs were shipped to retailers, distributors, rack jobbers, etc.
Chart Update - "Bama Breeze" has moved up three spots this week on the Country Radio Charts to number 60.

Article on Buffett's Response to French Incident
submitted 10/10/06 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
Playfuls.com has an article up where Buffett discusses the recent incident in France: "Jimmy Buffett Putting Drug 'bust' In Past"
Laid-back singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett says he was both amused and frightened by his recent "drug bust" in France.
"They hauled me into the interrogation room, and I figured I was going to jail," Buffett said. "They were not kidding around."
The misunderstanding was cleared up and Buffett was cleared to leave the country with only a fine for not carrying his prescription. He was, however, disappointed by erroneous press reports about the incident.
"The great thing about it is I was totally innocent," he said.
Buffett said the incident sparked some song ideas, including "Too Long in Toulon" and "Bad News Can Spoil Your Breakfast," the latter inspired by an e-mail from Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart.

Buffett's Pills Seized by French Authorities
submitted 10/06/06 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
The New York Post reports that Buffett was caught in France with more than 100 tablets of ecstasy.
French authorities reportedly seized more than 100 tabs of club drug "ecstasy" from Jimmy Buffett's luggage this week.
The Grammy-winning singer got into trouble when he flew into Toulon-Hyères International Airport in the South of France on a rented private jet and customs officials started poking around in his suitcases. Buffett, who was on his way to chill out in the ritzy resort town of St. Tropez, was detained, but not arrested, and allowed to go free after paying a fine of 300 euros - about $380.
A spokeswoman for Buffett denied he'd had any ecstasy in the luggage. The rep insisted, "It was medicine prescribed by his doctor." But she wouldn't name the medicine or what ailment Buffett was using it for. She also refused to comment on why, if the substance was legally prescribed, Buffett agreed to pay the fine.

Article on Ultimate Parrothead Contest Winner

The Tampa Tribune has an article on the Ultimate Parrothead Contest winner Megan Mohr: "Change In Latitude Changes Attitude"
Megan Mohr and Les Criscillo didn't just see musician Jimmy Buffett in concert in Boston this summer.
The couple, who met three years ago at a Buffett concert in Tampa, got to go backstage and meet their idol. It was a dream come true for Mohr and Criscillo, who like many Buffett fans call themselves Parrot Heads.
Mohr doesn't usually have the connections to get a backstage pass, but with the help of her vocal cords won a contest on Sirius satellite radio's Jimmy Buffett's Radio Margaritaville.
"I was giddy! I've been such a Parrot Head as long as I can remember," Mohr said.
The contest required contestants to call in and sing 20 seconds of a Buffett song. She sang the woman's part in a "Son of a Son of a Sailor." One thousand people entered, and she was one of five finalists.
Here is an image from Megan's hometown paper in Plant City.

Jimmy Buffett's newest Margaritaville opened on Grand Cayman last week. Cayman Net News has an article on the opening: "Margaritaville opens in Grand Cayman".
The newest attraction in Grand Cayman opened its doors to the public last week and reportedly turned into an instant hit.
Following on the success of Margaritaville in other resorts in the Caribbean, Mexico, and the US, George Town, with its regular influx of cruise ship passengers, has been chosen for the latest addition to the chain of themed restaurants originally created and made famous by the singer and songwriter Jimmy Buffett.
Manager Arthur Screaton said the place had been a success from the moment the doors opened. He pointed out that the facilities are not just targeted at cruise shippers but are also ideal for long-stay visitors and residents looking for somewhere different to go in the evenings.

Mailboat Records' Info on the New Album
submitted 9/19/06 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
Mailboat Records has an information page up on the new album.

Here's the writeup:
Take The Weather With You returns Buffett back to his country foundation with breezy ballads, interpretations of alt-country songs, a version of Merle Haggard's "Silver Wings" and mariachi horns in "Cinco De Mayo In Memphis." A tribute to the historic bars along the Gulf Coast in "Bama Breeze" is flavored with sublime Southern riffs, and Buffett fulfilled a dream of playing with Mark Knopfler, who wrote and guests on "Whoop De Doo."
Buffett reinvents Mary Gauthier's "Wheel Inside The Wheel" with swampy rhythms crafted by Lafayette, Louisiana slide guitarist Sonny Landreth. "That song summed up the French Quarter when I was 18 years old," Buffett said. "Without realizing it, I went to my roots on this record. It's not a stretch for me to do country music."
On Take The Weather With You, he takes a philosophical look at the devastation of the Crescent City in the ballad "Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On," which Buffett wrote with former drummer Matt Betton. "When the storm hit New Orleans, I was performing at Wrigley Field in Chicago" said Buffett. "I go back to the emotions I was feeling on stage there during the biggest show of my life. That spilled over into this record. People still don't understand the devastation along the Gulf Coast. I was angry and started writing about it, but Matt sent me the first makings of 'Move On' and that calmed me down."
Take The Weather With You combines a variety of styles and sounds from Nashville, New Orleans and Key West. It's a smooth sail for Buffett.

NY Post Review of Madison Square Garden Show
submitted 9/16/06 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
The New York Post has a review of Thursday night's show at Madison Square Garden in New York City: "MSG Melts Into Margaritaville"
Of the new material from Buffett's upcoming CD due out next month, he and the band were best during the song "Party at the End of the World," which had a Brazilian carnival quality.
The dancing-in-the-streets atmosphere climaxed during the song "Fins," where the sold-out house pressed their palms together in a shark-fin shape above their heads and did the individually stupid, collectively fun fin dance.

StubHub's 20 Most Rockin' U.S. Cities
submitted 8/14/06 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.
Post or View Comments |
Jimmy Buffett continues to be one of the hottest tickets in all of music. Ticket marketplace StubHub has "put together a list of America's 20 Most Rockin' Cities. Shows in these cities have been the most active sellers on StubHub this summer with rankings based on total sales for concert events only, occurring between May 15th and September 15th."
Additionally, StubHub has included the most popular show for each city that made the Top 20. New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago finished one, two and three respectively, and Madonna's Confessions Tour was the top grossing act in each city. Interestingly, Madonna and Jimmy Buffett combined as the favorite shows for more than half of the cities in the top 20.
View the top 20 list here.
"Fan loyalty is a true indicator of quality performers. This summer has been filled with great concert tours and fans are showing their support in large numbers," said Jeff Fluhr, founder and CEO. "Madonna is always a huge draw when she tours but the realization that Jimmy Buffett continues to pack 'em in across the country is eye-opening and a testament to his legions of fans."
StubHub also notes that "Jimmy Buffett's 20-stop tour has the highest per date average, based on total sales. Nationwide, the average price for a ticket has been $130."

In today's edition of the Boston Herald, Steve Morse has an interview with Buffett. He answers the question of why he is calling the new album "Nothing But A Breeze."
Q. You have a new album due this fall. Weren't you also going to title it ``Party at the End of the World"?
A. Yes, but I learned a long time ago that if you have to explain it, it's not really a good title. People said to me, ``What does it mean? Is it the end of the world? Is there a party? What?" There were too many questions for an album title. So I came up with ``Nothing But a Breeze," from the old Jesse Winchester song. I won't have to explain that.

Boston Herald: "Buffett A Selling Machine"
submitted 8/8/06 by Air M'Ville Cap'n.

The Boston Herald has an article exploring Buffett's wealth: "A pirate looks at $40 million-plus: Behind the beach bum image, Jimmy Buffett is a selling machine"
For a guy who began busking on the streets of New Orleans in the early ’70s, Buffett hasn’t done too badly. After a few flop records early on, he hit gold and then platinum singing about booze and food: Not only did he change attitudes and latitudes, he changed his tax bracket.
Buffett’s most lucrative gig is touring. But these live shows also serve as promotion for the rest of King Parrothead’s products. Though record sales make up only a tiny part of his business, Buffett has pimped his best known song, “Margaritaville,” to market everything from his restaurants and cafes to his tequilas and frozen foods. Here’s a look at just a few of the offerings from his empire that help earn him an estimated $60 million to $70 million a year. His image may say beach bum, but his bank account says Buffett.

They spoke about how hot the Camden show was, and how to prepare for the Manassas show by drinking lots of water.
The Live at Wrigley DVD was mentioned and Jimmy discussed a little of what went into putting it together. One of the most moving things for Jimmy was playing City of New Orleans with Mac.
Miles and Jimmy also spoke about the Bama Breeze music video that was shot in Bay St. Louis last Friday. Jimmy said that the video will be released in early September, along with the single, on country radio. By shooting the video there, he hopes to keep attention on hurricane stricken areas. And Jimmy hopes it brought some light to Bay St Louis. After the shoot, Jimmy played some songs for the people gathered there.
They talked about the hurricane relief concert "From the Big Apple to the Big Easy," and a little about the Hoot DVD that comes out August 15th.
Finishing up the discussion was talk about the new album, scheduled to be released in October. They are finishing it up and are down to just 3 or 4 more songs. "It's not a star studded album, more of a Coral Reefer album." The band Gomez will be featured on the album. Also, Jimmy covers a Mark Knopfler song, with Mark appearing on that track.
