Don't have an article link handy, but the Marlins suspended Ozzie Guillen for 5 games after his comments about admiring Fidel Castro. For some reason, those comments didn't sit well with Miami's large population of Cuban-Americans and Cuban exiles.

Indians to sign OF Johnny Damon

The Indians will sign Johnny Damon, reports Ken Rosenthal
of FOX Sports. Damon confirmed to Jim Bowden of ESPN and
MLB Network Radio that he has agreed to sign with the
Tribe.

The deal will include a full no-trade clause and allow Damon
to opt out on a specified date after Grady Sizemore returns,
Rosenthal reports. Sizemore is expected to miss 8-12 weeks
due to back surgery. Financial terms of the deal are unknown.
We heard that the Scott Boras client would sign by May earlier
this month.

Damon, 38, figures to step into Cleveland's LF situation as
soon as he's ready to join the team. Shelley Duncan has
started all 5 of the Indians' games in left, but he's best
deployed as the right-handed half of a platoon. A fit between
the Tribe and Damon seemed natural for most of the offseason.

Just 277 hits away from 3,000 for his career, Damon
hit .261/.326/.418 with 16 homers and 19 steals for
the Rays last season. He has played fewer than 400
total innings in the outfield over the last two years,
but he has appeared in at least 140 games in each
of the past 16 years.

The Indians tried to acquire Bobby Abreu a few
weeks ago, presumably for the same role Damon
will fill.

Red Sox close to acquiring OF Marlon Byrd from Cubs

The Red Sox are close to acquiring Marlon Byrd from the
Cubbies, reports Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe. Boston
has been actively exploring the OF market following Jacoby
Ellsbury's shoulder injury.

Byrd, 34, has just 3 singles and 1 walk in 47 plate appearances
this season, resulting in a .070/.149/.070 batting line. He hit
.276/.324/.395 in 482 plate appearances last season while missing
time with multiple fractures after taking a pitch to the face, an injury
that occurred in Fenway Park. Byrd is in the final season of his 3 yr,
$15MM contract and will earn $6.5MM this year. He is not in the
Cubs lineup for Saturday's game 2 against the Reds.

Ellsbury's subluxed his right shoulder last week and there is
still not timetable for his return. Carl Crawford is also on the
shelf with wrist and elbow problems, leaving the Red Sox with
an OF of Jason Repko, Ryan Sweeney, Cody Ross, and Darnell
McDonald.

Byrd has played CF exclusively during his time with the
Cubs, though he has experience in all 3 OF spots.

On the subject of the BoSox, where is Beth and her Red Sox thread ? :hmm:

Official : Red Sox acquire OF Marlon Byrd from Cubs

Cubs OF Marlon Byrd confirmed that he has been traded to
the Red Sox, tweets Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com. The
Cubs will receive Michael Bowden and a player to be named
later in exchange for Byrd while covering most of his $6.5MM
salary, according to Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com.

Tigers release 3B Brandon Inge

Slumping 3B Brandon Inge was released by the Detroit
Tigers on Thursday.

The team announced the move following a 5-4 loss to the
Seattle Mariners. Inge is batting .100 (2 for 20) with a home
run and 2 RBIs this season.

"It's one of those things you can kind of see how things are
going before they come. But it's no hard feelings whatsoever.
This is my family, this is where I've been my whole career.
I'll miss the guys, I will," Inge said. "But I have a chance to
go play maybe somewhere else. It may be a good thing, a
good start for me personally, but my heart will always be in
Detroit for 100 percent and forever."

The 34-year-old Inge is in his 12th season in the majors, all
with Detroit. He played mostly 3B for the Tigers, but has also
caught, played the OF and 2B.

Inge is a .234 career hitter with 140 homers and 589 RBIs.
With his release, Ramon Santiago is the lone player remaining
from the 2003 Tigers team that lost a near-record 119 games.
Inge had been the only player that had remained with the
organization uninterrupted since 2003.

Detroit is responsible for the $4,808,743 remaining on Inge's
$5.5 million salary this year and the $500,000 buyout of his
$6 million option for 2013, a total of $5,308,743. But the
Tigers could save up to $417,049 if he were to sign with
another team Friday.

The Twins, A's, Orioles and D-backs are among the teams
that may have interest in Inge.

3B Brandon Inge to sign with A's

3B Brandon Inge has agreed to sign with the Oakland A's,
a person with knowledge of the negotiations said Sunday.

Inge gives Oakland experience at a position that has been
mix-and-match so far - and some versatility considering he
can also play several other spots.

The deal was pending a physical and final paperwork,
the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity
because nothing had been finalized and the A's were
yet to make a formal announcement.

He'll try to fill a huge void at 3B, where the A's lost projected
starter Scott Sizemore to a season-ending knee injury in the
first full-squad workout of spring training Feb. 27th. Oakland
manager Bob Melvin has tried Josh Donaldson, Eric Sogard and
Luke Hughes in the spot so far. That trio left for the current road
trip batting a combined .111 with 8 errors.

It's a far cry from the sure-handed play the A's used to get
from 6 time Gold Glove winner Eric Chavez at 3rd. Oakland
thought it had the answer in Sizemore, who also came from
the Tigers in a trade last May.

Inge is a .234 career hitter with 140 homers and 589 RBIs

Dodgers to sign OF Bobby Abreu

The Dodgers have reached agreement on a deal with
Bobby Abreu, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.
The veteran will serve as a bat off of the bench and a
part-time outfielder.

On Wednesday, we learned that the Dodgers were in
serious talks with the 38-year-old. The Angels released
Abreu one week ago and will be on the hook for the remainder
of his $9MM salary. Abreu's new deal could be for as little as
the pro-rated portion of the MLB minimum.

Orioles close to bringing back INF Miguel Tejada

The O's are close to a deal with Miguel Tejada, reports
Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com. GM Dan Duquette told Roch
Kubatko of MASNSports.com that they'll watch Tejada
work out at the team's complex in Florida on Monday
before officially signing him.

"We've got to take a look at him first," said the GM.

Tejada, 37, hit just .239/.270/.326 in 343 plate appearances
with the Giants last season before being released in September.
Tejada spent 2004-2007 and the 1st half of 2010 with Baltimore,
hitting .305/.354/.481 overall. Tejada could provide some 3B depth
as Mark Reynolds continues to struggle.

Orlando Hudson to sign with White Sox

Free agent Orlando Hudson claims that he is set to
sign with the White Sox, according to Peter Gammons
of MLB.com. The 2B was released by the Padres on
Thursday afternoon.

The veteran was hitting just .211/.260/.317 in 35 games
for San Diego this year and wasn't terribly helpful in
grooming the club's young talent. Hudson will earn
$5.5MM this year as well as the $2MM buyout he is owed
for the 2013 season.

Hudson has agreed to terms with the White Sox but
has not signed officially, a source close to the situation
told Scott Merkin of MLB.com. The veteran is expected
to play some 3B and back up Gordon Beckham at 2B.
Hudson turned down an opportunity to play regularly
elsewhere in order to join the White Sox in this role.
