Can not afford the subscription....being a resident of the area and having very early memories of the backside of it there were elements which created allowed the outlaw and hill country scene to take on a separate personalty from what was generally speaking a reactionary phase in music.

The radical improvement of highway 290 from Austin to Johnson City played a significant if under appreciated role. Simply put in the fifties getting to Luckenbach from Austin was a danged adventure 290 out of Austin was described as a snake path with a bar ditch on either side yeah buddy.

You also have credit modern technology which turned a marginally habital area of land (The Texas hill country) into something you could build a nice house on. I spent over a year and half working residential construction....in that area BRUTAL ugly cold mean winter ornery as a woman on her 28th day from October through April! Central air, water and good heat made it possible for groups other than half crazy Alsatians and tough Germans to scratch a living off the Edwards Platau!

Timing played a role along with technology. The supreme irony is if JFK had NEVER been assinated you would not have had the reactionary shift in music and getting to Johnson city from Austin would have been a much lower priority in highway improvements.

I read the article interesting. I picked up this anecdote from my father who flew for PHI for a time....the story as he heard from the supervisor of his supervisor was less than a decade old about a player.

Kris Kristofferson had landed on a rig helicopter was still running but it was on the platform helipad. Kris was asleep he had just gotten back from Nashville trying to pitch his songs. His then supervisor goes up to him and tells him to make a choice music or flying. Well he made a decision we know the rest of the story.

I can kick over controversies about later stages of the Hill Country scene and its presence state. I got a question a philosphical question what is the outlaw quotent of Six Pence None The Richer?

Yeah I mean the band formed on both beside where DeNile flows close where Der Guadalupe and De Comal join under 10 miles from Gruene Hall.

Try this on for size Six Pence NTR and the later career of Leigh Nash and Matt Slocum are reactions to acting counter to the early stages and aftermath of the chemical enhancements and some of early lack of moral vision that was was the Outlaw scene. You know their is a fine line between love and hate. The sheer amount of whimsy in Six Pence and I will throw in a couple local photographers is a bit of rebellion as sure as Outlaw music was to excesses. Some of those excesses were of the Outlaw scene.

Also if you look at the Cover of Don't Dream Its Over which is anything More haunting and Bitter then its original by Crowded House. You have There She Goes..... I would argue that their is some outlaw quotent to Six Pence. Having been an eye witness to what fed what I consider now a reaction to some of the excesses. The Dream of Unicorn was powerful even if it was just a dream a phony mythology.

You have completely lost me but to each their own. I see, nor hear any correlation between Sixspence None the Richer and the Outlaw country movement. Perhaps I should try some of that peyote mentioned in the article.

1st of all understand what formed Outlaw occurred over a large geographic area Austin to Lukenbach 90 minutes Lukenbach to Flores County story about 90minutes. At one point Dripping Springs was seperate from Austin instead of being part of the same bugly mass of development in its present state. From Armadillo WOrld Headquarters to Gruene Hall, Cheatam STreet Warehouses to Flores General store up to Lukenbach you have a chunk of territory larger than some European Nations! 290 West out of Austin before LBJ presidency was one form. 290 brought Dripping springs closer to Austin and Lukenbach Where George STrait's daughter was killed would be within 2 miles of a line drawn on a map between Cheatam Street Warehouse and Green Hall!

Second you introduce arbitary labels yes their were rivalries but Cheatam STreet Warehouse which is a venue for REK and descendants of the "Outlaw" Scene was also where George Strait got his start! One Denton musicolgist pointed out what George Strait plays is barely removed Bob Wills. Johnny is from Sabinal which well pull up a good Texas map draw a line from Lukenbach and draw a line Helotes (Flores General STore)

Third tangent off an earlier point if you look at John Denver's rise in popularity, Gordon Lightfoot, and even the Eagles plum back to CCR you have a reactionary shift in music generally. The degrees of separation between the long version of American Pie and Blue Eyes Crying In the Wind is VASTLY over stated.

To flat out deny any outlaw influence on Six Pence NTR is the deny the basic facts that Leigh and Matt probably heard Wild Fire on 92.1 KNBT, Desperados Waiting For a Train, hundreds of times before the Age of 10! Austin City LImits was a show parents watched and KNBT was was the radio station our parents listened to. We were plum soaked up into it! No Six Pence Is not Played on that radio station....you will probably not hear a bold overt style bond unless you know what to look for.

Sorry I am getting ornery here......on youtube pull up the original Townes Van Zandt Pancho and Lefty, Emmy Lou's version circa 1977 and finally the castrated Willie and Merle Version. Emmy Lou's is probably the best retaining the lions share of the original bite but being just smooth enough to go down! You catch a degree of irony and bitterness. Six Pence NTR "There She Goes" and "There Cover Don't Dream Its Over" it ain't crack you over the head with it aint overt but it is there!

Finally I will argue that surprise surprise Six Pence is a reaction to a reaction. Kiss Me is an escape to a world that well uh.....was long gone. You can pick up pieces of it by eating dinner at the Grist Mill. It is the etherial nature of Wild Fire cranked up 10 fold! Six Pence is outlaw to outlaws born of outlaws with ton of out law genes it is also rebellion against its outlaw parentage. HOwever if you listen closely you notice some of the parent in the rebellious Nashville child.

There is more than Six Pence NTR than Kiss Me
"Kiss Me" represents dreams and aspirations an ideal of sorts.....from an era and place. It like "Wildfire" is etherial and dream like. Overlook the Gaudalupe River eat a nice meal at the Gristmill near Gruene hall you will see what I mean.

I will not deny Six Pence NTR is not rural and not country the area has become one huge suburb during the two decades that passed since the birth of outlaw country. The small town became a suburb.
