When Ian Kinsler stole second Thursday night, did you see Yadi's reaction? He was MAD! I know he takes it personally whenever someone steals a base. Gotta give credit to Kinsler, though. Yadi's release was fast and his throw was spot on, as was Furcal's tag. Kinsler just got too much of a jump on the pitcher. That play ought to go into baseball how-to videos on how to steal a base; it was textbook perfect.

Oh, yeah! The St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Rams are both in the DFW area this weekend! Wow!

Cards excerise option on P Adam Wainwright

The Redbirds officially exercised Adam Wainwright's
options for 2012 and 2013 during this year's playoff
run, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post
Dispatch. Wainwright, who is working his way back
from Tommy John surgery, will earn $21MM over the
course of the next 2 seasons.

He has resumed throwing and is nearing maximum
effort again. The Cards expect Wainwright to have
a normal offseason and be ready for Spring Training
2012.

Cards GM John Mozeliak said in August that he
doesn't expect to explore the possibility of a
long-term extension with the right-hander.

Tony LaRussa retired this morning. Who will be the new manager? I think Terry Francona would be a good fit. The Cardinals best era's in recent history have been under two "American League" managers: Whitey Herzog and TLR.

On the other hand, the Cardinals have been grooming Jose Oquendo to be manager some day and guess who his mentors were? Whitey Herzog and Tony LaRussa. So, I wouldn't be surprised of the postion is filled "in-house."

I have same thoughts as Ken. Oquendo or Francona. Francona is a proven winner but I think Oquendo deserves a shot. He's done some managing in the WBC I believe

Also, Oquendo and Pujols are close friends. If Oquendo manages, I think that makes it easier to re-sign Pujols. Now if that were the only reason to hire him, I'd say it's a no go, but I think Oquendo has what it takes to be a major league manager and being friends with Pujols is a bonus.

I'd be happy with Oquendo or Francona, or Joe Maddon, if the Rays even let the Cardinals talk to him.

Redbirds decline options on Dotel & Furcal

The Cardinals declined their options for Octavio Dotel
and Rafael Furcal, according to the AP (via Sports Illustrated).
The Cards will pay Dotel a $750K buyout instead of a $3.5MM
salary and they'll pay Furcal a $1.3MM buyout instead of a
$12MM salary.

Dotel, 37, arrived in St. Louis along with Marc Rzepczynski
and Edwin Jackson in the trade that sent Colby Rasmus to
Toronto. In 54 total innings for the Cardinals and Blue Jays,
Dotel posted a 3.50 ERA with 10.3 K/9, 2.8 BB/9 and a 30.1%
ground ball rate. MLBTR reported today that Dotel is a Type
A free agent.

Furcal, a Type B free agent, hit .231/.298/.348 in 369 plate
appearances for the Dodgers and Cardinals in 2011, spending
time on the DL with a strained left oblique. The 34-year-old
SS started discussing an extension in September, but didn't
reach an agreement.
