BOSTON -- Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester took the highly unusual step Monday of placing calls to several Boston media outlets, including ESPNBoston.com, to forcefully dispute the way the team has been characterized in the aftermath of its September collapse.

"I'm trying to set the record straight," Lester said, insisting he was acting on his own and not at the behest of anyone else, including the team. "It's tough to sit back and let people bash your name, and that's what they're doing.

"You know what? We didn't play good baseball. People are making us out to be a bunch of drunk, fried-chicken eating SOBs, playing video games. You can ask my wife, for the last 10 years I don't think I've played a single video game, and Josh (Beckett) and Lack (John Lackey) are the same way. The media here is VERY tough, much like New York! I'm listening to all that I can stomach, but I have my own opinions on the matter as well and I'll just stick with that. I love Lester and I love this team, and I know that stuff like this goes on in pretty much ALL club houses. I'm sorry but that just doesn't excuse it for me. The eating part I don't care about, although if you look at our starting rotation from April through September, you can definitely see some unhealthy weight gain which in my opinion goes against everything that a professional ball player should be about. That being said, I think this all goes a LOT deeper than what has surfaced thus far..... One of the clips on your link mentioned that the Sox management has a history of smeering people after they leave and that is absolutely TRUE! So right now, I'm not sure what to believe....and to be honest, at this point, I really don't give a rat's ass. What's done is done. now....CLEAN IT THE HELL UP!!!

Big Papi says he wants to come back to BOS in 2012

David Ortiz wants to return for his 10th season with
the Red Sox in 2012, the slugger tells MLB.com's Mark
Newman. Ortiz has consistently said he'd like to keep
playing in Boston when asked about his pending free
agency, but last week said there was "too much drama"
around the club and “I don't know if I want to be part of
this drama for next year," while also noting the calmer
state of the Yankees' organization.

"Of course I would like to come back," Ortiz said. "We have
a lot of things going on right now, so once they go through
all this stuff -- GM and manager things -- I think they're
going to start talking to the players. We'll see. We've got
time."

Ortiz earned $12.5MM last season when Boston exercised
it's team option on the slugger for 2011 and he projects
as a Type A free agent this offseason.

BoSox to lose another, this time pitching coach Curt Young

The Boston Red Sox's exodus continues.

Pitching coach Curt Young is following manager
Terry Francona out of town, agreeing to return to
the Oakland Athletics, the A's announced.

MLB.com first reported the move.

Young left Oakland last season and has 1 year remaining
on his Red Sox contract, but change has been swift in Boston.

Young helped the A's in 2010 to an MLB-best 3.47 ERA,
the lowest by an AL team since 1990. The Red Sox, though,
did not live up to expectations last year under his tutelage --
their team ERA of 4.20 (22nd in the majors) basically duplicated
their 4.19 ERA from 2010.

The A's were 10th in the league last season with a 3.71 team ERA.

Theo Epstein takes out ad in the Boston Globe

Departing Red Sox GM Theo Epstein took out a full-page ad
in Sunday's Boston Globe to offer "infinite thanks" for the 10
years he spent with the organization, the last 9 as GM.

Under the heading, "10 Years, Two Championships, Countless Memories,
Inifinite Thanks," the ad takes the form of a letter from Epstein. He writes:
"It's been a privilege to be part of the Red Sox for the last decade and an
honor to work alongside some of the most talented and dedicated people
in baseball."

He cites the Red Sox ownership group as having a "commitment
to excellence at all levels" and says he is grateful for their "unwavering
dedication to winning." Epstein also thanks assistant GM Ben Cherington,
as well as the players, coaches and former manager Terry Francona for
their "tireless effort."

A source told ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes that
Cherington will be named Epstein's successor.

The teams are expected to hold news conferences announcing
the moves Tuesday, the next off day in the World Series.

Epstein also thanks Red Sox fans, saying the "Fenway faithful"
has been the "driving force" behind the team's success.

He also offered thanks for the support given to "The Foundation to
be Named Later,'' which he cofounded with his brother Paul. The
foundation has given $5 million in grants to needy youth in the greater
Boston area.

The Globe's website indicates a full-page color ad in the Sunday
paper costs $9,801, with premium placement potentially costing
about an additional $2,000.

BOS covets Jays skipper John Farrell

When the Red Sox and Terry Francona parted ways, Blue Jays
manager John Farrell was the preferred candidate to manage
the team, according to a major league source.

There is conflicting information on how deep the Red Sox are
at this point in continuing their exploration of Farrell. They have
discussed internally a few current managers, and the one who
would fit best would be Farrell. One major league source said
the Sox would be concerned about giving compensation to a
division rival.

Another thought the issue already had been brought up
and the discussions about it went about as well as the
Theo Epstein/Cubs compensation talks. In other words,
nowhere. "Hard to believe the Blue Jays would let him go
back," said a team source.

P John Lackey to have Tommy John surgery, out for all of 2012

John Lackey will undergo reconstructive elbow surgery and
miss the 2012 season, the latest setback in his rough year
with the Red Sox.

New BOS GM Ben Cherington made the announcement
Tuesday during a news conference at which he was
introduced as the successor to Theo Epstein.

Lackey was 12-12 with a 6.41 ERA in the 2nd year of
a 5 yr, $82.5 million contract. Cherington said the Tommy
John surgery would be performed, probably by noted orthopedist
Dr. Lewis Yocum, but he did not know when. Lackey had elbow
soreness during the season and had an MRI in May or June,
Cherington said. He had another one after the season and
was examined recently by Yocum in LA.

"John Lackey pitched through circumstances this year
that I don't think any of us in this room can fully understand,"
Cherington said, "and he got beat up for it a little bit along the
way. This guy was dealing with some stuff both on the field and
off the field that were really difficult.

Cherington hopes Lackey can be a much improved pitcher in 2013.

BoSox to interview Brewers coach Sveum for manager Opening

Dale Sveum remembers both good times and tough
times in Boston. Now, he'd like another chance with
the Red Sox -- as manager.

Boston interviewed Sveum, currently the Brewers' hitting
coach, for its open managerial job on Wednesday.

A 3B coach with the Red Sox in 2004 and 2005, Sveum was
the 2nd person interviewed by the Red Sox this week. The
club brought in Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin on Monday.

"It was the greatest experience I could ever have; we
won the World Series in '04," said Sveum, who turns
48 this month. "For being a coach or a staff member
or whatever you want to call it, it's the ultimate place
you want to be."

Sveum has some big-game managerial experience on his
resume, albeit a brief stint in Milwaukee. He managed the
Brews for the final 12 games of the 2008 regular season
and the playoffs after Ned Yost was fired.
