I don't think that anyone could have foreseen Crawford's apparent demise here but sometimes that happens..usually to the Sox I mean it's not like he was coming from the NL or even from a different division for that matter! He just had a bad year and that is what it is. As for the catch....I'd say the yes he could have caught it, but it would have been one of those tremendous plays if he did which simply don't always happen. He almost got it, but he didn't. And you can say "that is what he is paid to do" like every yahoo on Boston Sports Radio is this morning, but the fact remains that the Sox should NEVER have been in the position to have it come down to that play in the first place! He didn't let it drop in front of him, he slid to make the catch....just couldn't come up with it. On any normal day that would have been called a good effort.

You're absolutely right and that's very astute. Yes it came down to that play but there were a bunch of other things. How about win 1 or 2 other games in the month. How about Papelbon not groove an 0-2 to the guy before. It came down to that play, but like you said, it never should have.

As passionate a Sox fan as I am, I first and foremost love and understand the game. (even though I suck at Fantasy baseball) That being said....there's all this talk this morning about canning Theo and Tito and on and on...typical Boston Sports Radio...the only one that I agree with is getting rid of Lackey....he's just not good....and he's a hot head too. Just doesn't fit in here in my opinion. That being said....despite the injuries this year we still had our proverbial ACES in Beckett and Lester and neither one of them did anything in Sept that is note worthy. TERRIBLE month....and a very sad ending to what could have been a spectacular season. Oh well....that's what makes baseball baseball right?

Report : Epstein's days in Boston maybe Numbered

You’ve heard the rumors for weeks — if not months — by now.

Yet, neither side will acknowledge reports that Theo
Epstein may be headed to the Cubs. Both Cubs owner
Tom Ricketts and Red Sox owner John Henry have done
their best to engage in verbal ggymnastics — never
actually answering a question about the rumors with
a straight answer.

Gerry Callahan of the Boston Herald thinks comments
made by Henry last week on a Boston radio station
could indicate the end of Epstein’s run in Boston.

Callhan writes:

“…Everyone seems to think (Epstein to the Cubs) will happen
soon. How could it not after Henry spoke of the “shelf life” of a
GM and the “pressure cooker” that is the city of Boston ? You
just don’t mention those things if you want to keep a guy in
your organization for the next 5 yrs. You don’t bring up the
shelf life of something unless you believe it’s drawing to an
end.“

Granted, Epstein has had one of the most impressive runs
by a GM in the history of the game. He took a “cursed”
franchise and won 2 World Series 9 yrs. But as Henry said,
Epstein can’t be the GM in Boston forever.

“Epstein is in the last year of his contract with the Red Sox,
and there has been no talk of an extension or a raise in Boston.
How could there be ? The owners are not happy with the
performance of the team. They might have considered giving
Theo 1 more season to right the ship, but along came the
Chicago Cubs. They looked at Epstein and saw a potential
savior.“

Red Sox to name assistant GM Cherington new General Manager

The Red Sox are calling on Theo Epstein's top assistant
to restore order in Boston. They have told assistant
GM Ben Cherington that he'll be the team's next GM,
according to Yahoo's Tim Brown. Cherington will assume
the responsibilities of the GM once the Cubs and Red Sox
finalize the arrangement that will send Epstein to Chicago.

Cherington started his baseball career with the Indians in
1998. He joined the Red Sox under Dan Duquette and worked
extensively with Epstein, who he considers a mentor.

"I learned more [from Epstein] about the game and people
and how to get things done and how to do all of that with
a sense of humor and compassion," Cherington told me in
August. "It has made me a better person and if I’m ever
lucky enough to be a GM it’ll make me a much better GM."

Cherington has experience as an area scout and has
also worked on player acquisitions, arbitration and
quantitative analysis. His first job as a GM will begin
with a search for manager Terry Francona's replacement.
