BoSox & Adrian Gonzalez reach agreement on a contract Extension

The Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms with 1B Adrian Gonzalez
on a 7 yr contract worth $154 million, multiple media outlets, including
ESPN, are reporting. The deal will be announced by the Red Sox on Friday.

Gonzalez receives a $6 million signing bonus, $21 million per year
from 2012-16 and $21.5 million per year in 2017 and 2018, sources
with knowledge of the deal told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
Sources also said the deal has a partial no-trade clause.

The contract is the largest agreed-upon by the team's current ownership.
The $160 million contract signed by former Red Sox OF Manny Ramirez
was reached while the team was owned by the Jean Yawkey Trust.

David Ortiz Terrified After Hearing About Red Sox Bats Coming Alive

http://www.onionsportsnetwork.com/artic ... sox,20171/

BOSTON—During last Sunday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, designated hitter David Ortiz was reportedly horrified by manager Terry Francona’s comment that the Red Sox’ bats were coming alive, which caused the panicked slugger to scream warnings and urge teammates to flee Fenway Park.

"If the bats are suddenly alive, we better get out of here before they start swinging really hard at us," said a visibly distressed Ortiz, who cowered on top of the bench for most of the final five innings of Boston’s 8-1 win over the Blue Jays. "I don’t want to be hit with wood."

"I hope that, if they come alive, they swing and miss like I do," Ortiz continued.

Team sources confirmed that upon hearing the Red Sox’ bats were beginning to show signs of life, Ortiz displayed his intense fear by frantically scrambling around the dugout, strapping on a catcher’s mask for protection, attempting to hide under a pile of jackets, playing dead when the batboy walked by carrying the team’s bats, and pleading with first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to save him from the bats.

Ortiz also told Red Sox players to avoid making any sudden movements, as it might provoke the team’s bats to attack.

"The way we treat the bats, they will probably be mad at us," Ortiz said. "My job is to hit the bat against the ball sometimes. The bats might be extra mad at me. But I didn't mean to hurt any bats."

"I’m sorry, bats. Please don’t kill me," Ortiz added. "I never wanted the bats to be in pain."

As a peace offering, Ortiz reportedly tossed several adhesive bandages and a tube of antibiotic cream at the team's rack of baseball bats from a safe distance. However, when the bats noisily tumbled to the ground, the six-time All-Star dashed into the outfield and shrieked, "Help, they’re rolling after me."

According to the Red Sox, Ortiz was constantly expressing concerns that the bats outnumbered the players and could smell their fear. In addition, Ortiz reportedly worried that the team didn’t have the proper weapons to fight off the bats.

"If we had matches, we could start the bats on fire. They’re made of wood and wood burns," Ortiz said. "Or if we had an axe we could chop down the bats. I don’t see any axes around here."

"I don’t know if bats have mouths or teeth, but don’t let them bite you," Ortiz added. "I heard a bunch of times that you can get rabies from bats."

Ortiz, who took precautions to avoid the bats at all costs, tried to abstain from playing in the game by quietly sitting in the corner of the Red Sox' bullpen, and attempted on several occasions to hide behind players in the Blue Jays' dugout. When Ortiz was discovered by Red Sox coaches shortly before his spot in the order came up, he arrived at the plate empty-handed and pretended to be holding a bat.

"Evidently he doesn't remember the time last year when he heard someone say the Sox bats were cold, and he covered them with blankets and brought in sweaters and mittens for them," Red Sox batting coach Dave Magadan said. "This is the worst I’ve ever seen him. It was annoying last month when he heard that Carl Crawford had a Gold Glove and started digging up the field, but at least he wasn’t shrieking in fear the whole time."

Team sources confirmed Ortiz became increasingly frightened and distressed as the game went on, eventually becoming convinced that, if the Red Sox' bats could come alive, other equipment such as balls, mitts, hats, and bases could become animated as well.

"Maybe balls don't like to be thrown really fast," Ortiz said. "Or hit far away into stands filled with people they don't know. And I hate having to catch balls, so I think, wouldn’t a mitt hate that, too? And hats—would you want someone putting their head inside of you? That feels bad."

"Bases are probably super mad, because I step on them pretty hard with my spiky shoes," Ortiz added. "Also, I see some people not stepping on the foul lines. Are foul lines the meanest thing? I guess they’re long. So maybe they could jump up and wrap around your neck and choke you."

Evidently overcome with fear and remorse, Ortiz then spent an hour apologizing for stepping on carpeting, dirt, stairs, grass, cement, and the insides of his shoes.

Ortiz said he briefly considered blockading the doors of the Red Sox' clubhouse with chairs and desks to prevent the balls, mitts, and bases from getting him, but realized that would leave him trapped inside with the angry pieces of furniture. Ortiz then began to quickly disrobe, claiming he wanted to be prepared if his uniform suddenly became sentient.

"I don’t like all this stuff coming alive; it’s too scary," said Ortiz, removing a last sock and standing completely naked in the middle of Fenway Park. "What’s next? Trees? Or Red Sox fans? Or Dustin Pedroia?"

BoSox sign P Kevin Millwood & acquire P Franklin Morales from the Rox

The Red Sox and Kevin Millwood have agreed to a minor league deal,
tweets Yahoo's Tim Brown. Millwood, 36, signed a minor league deal
with the Yanks earlier this year but opted out of his contract after
posting a 4.50 ERA through 3 minor league starts.

Boston also acquired P Franklin Morales from Colorado for a player
to be named later or cash considerations, according to Scott Lauber
of the Boston Herald (via Twitter). In order to make room for Morales,
P Hideki Okajima has been designated for assignment by the BoSox.

Boston has until November to either agree on a player in the Morales
trade or pay a nominal amount of money to the Rockies, tweets Buster
Olney of ESPN.

Morales was ranked as the 8th best prospect in baseball by
Baseball America prior to the 2008 season. Across parts of
5 big league seasons, he owns a 4.83 ERA with 7.1 K/9 and
5.1 BB/9.

The 25-year-old is out of options and the Rox have reportedly
been concerned about losing him to waivers.

Dice-K era maybe done in Boston

Daisuke Matsuzaka may yet require Tommy John surgery, which
would thereby conclude a very expensive headache of an era.
Among his shoulder, elbow and forearm, he's faced problems
with every part of his arm. The only thing left is his hand, and
as many times as he's raised a figurative middle finger at the
organization, it's a shock he hasn't hurt that, too.

Matsuzaka's tack with the Red Sox, according to sources inside and
outside the organization, has been simple: ignore what they want
and do what he wants. ... Should he need Tommy John, Matsuzaka
likely never would wear a Red Sox uniform again.

BoSox cut ties with OF Mike Cameron

The Red Sox announced that they have designated
OF Mike Cameron for assignment and called
INF Yamaico Navarro up to take Cameron's place
on the team. The move opens up a 40-man roster
spot.

Boston expected Cameron to hit lefty pitching
this year, but he has just a .143/.214/.302 line
in 70 plate appearances against southpaws.
The 38 yr old 3 time Gold Glove winner has
played all 3 OF outfield positions for the
Red Sox.

Cameron is in the final year of a 2 yr, $15.5MM deal
with Boston and earns $7.25MM in 2011. The Red Sox
still owe him roughly $3.625MM this year and they're
responsible for that entire sum unless they trade
Cameron.

They'll explore possible deals or he finds a new team
after being released. If he's traded, Boston will surely
take on significant salary and if he signs elsewhere,
his new club will owe him a pro-rated portion of the
MLB minimum salary.

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe first reported the move.

BoSox to open 2012 at Detroit

Red Sox are scheduled to open the '12 season
against the Tigers in Detroit, according to an early
draft of the major league schedule distributed to all
30 clubs and the players' union, according to a major
league source.

After 3 games in Detroit and 3 in Toronto, the Sox are
scheduled to play their home opener Friday, April 13th
against the Rays, who are scheduled to play 4 games that
weekend, including the Monday morning Patriots Day game.

The Texas Rangers are then in for 2 games, followed by
the Yanks, the scheduled opponent on April 20th, the
100th anniversary of the 1st game played at Fenway Park.
The Yankees are scheduled for 2 more games that weekend.

Unlike this season, when the Sox and Yanks met 9 times
by June 9th, in the season's first 63 games, the Sox and
Yanks will meet just once more before the All-Star break,
also at Fenway July 6-8.

The Sox are not scheduled to make their 1st visit
to Yankee Stadium until July 27-29, then return
Aug. 17-19.

The teams are scheduled to meet in 3 game series twice
in September -- at Fenway Sept. 11-13, and then in Yankee
Stadium Oct. 1-3, the final 3 days of the regular season.

NL East teams will be the principal rivals for the Sox in
interleague play. The Sox are scheduled to play the Phillies
in Philly from May 18-20. They then have a 6-game trip that
will take them to Florida to play the Marlins from June 12-14
and to NY to play the Mets from June 15-17.

Unlike this season, the Sox will not play 9 straight
interleague games on the road, a source of complaint for
manager Terry Francona, who was unable to use a DH for
that entire stretch.

The interleague rivals at home are 2 NL East teams, the
Nationals (June 8-10) and Braves (June 22-24), and one
NL West team, the Rockies (June 19-20).

Like this season, the Sox are scheduled to make
just 2 West Coast swings. The 1st is to Seattle
and Oakland (in that order) June 28-July 4. The
2nd is a 9 game swing to Anaheim, Oakland and
Seattle from Aug. 28-Sept. 5. So the Sox will be
on the West Coast for 2 major holidays, the 4th
of July in Oakland, and Labor Day (Sept. 3) in
Seattle.

They are scheduled to be home against
Detroit on Memorial Day (May 28).
