Braves sign OF Jonny Gomes

The Braves and Jonny Gomes agreed Thursday to a 1-yr contract with a vesting option.

Gomes, who played for Boston and Oakland in 2014, could be part of a LF platoon in a new-look OF.
He could share time with former Yankees prospect Zoilo Almonte, a switch-hitter who signed as a
free agent. Gomes hit only .234 with a career-low 6 homers for Boston and Oakland last year.

Marlins to sign Ichiro Suzuki

The Marlins have agreed to terms with OF Ichiro Suzuki, reports Craig Mish of MLB Network Radio.
The 41-yr-old Ichiro should serve as Miami’s 4th OF in 2015.

Cardinals sign P Carlos Villanueva

The Cards have reached a minor league pact with righty Carlos Villanueva, Derrick Goold of the
St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Villanueva will receive an invitation to big league camp.

The 31-yr-old swingman spent the past 2 seasons with the Cubs. He was hit hard when working
from the rotation, but Villanueva held opposing hitters to a .226/.284/.364 slash in 237 plate
appearances when pitching from the bullpen.

Villanueva looks to be a solid depth addition to the Redbirds staff.

Breaking : Padres to sign P James Shields

The Padres have agreed to terms with James Shields on a 4-yr deal likely between $72MM and $78MM,
SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo reports. The deal also includes a club option.

Shields’s option is worth $16MM, and the contract contains no incentives, tweets Cotillo. The deal
can max out at $91MM over five years if the option is picked up.
