Jimmy's 'Recent' LP Chartings

Post by HurricaneSeason » Thu Jul 16, 2015 10:08 am

Jimmy's success chart wise in the 1990s is hilarious considering how long he'd gone without an actual hit album (only SOASOAS broke the Billboard Top 10 Albums of his albums up to FRUITCAKES; CILCIA made it to 12, VOLCANO at 14).

FRUITCAKES debuted at #5
BAROMETER SOUP debuted at #6
BANANA WIND debuted at #4
CHRISTMAS ISLAND debuted at #27
DON'T STOP THE CARNIVAL debuted at #18
BEACH HOUSE ON THE MOON debuted at #8

Of his four LPs in the Twenty Hundreds 3 of the 4 albums were Top 10 debuts, with LTC being his first and only #1 LP.

FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD #5
LICENSE TO CHILL #1
TAKE THE WEATHER WITH YOU #4
BUFFET HOTEL #17

LTC and TTWWY both were #1 country LPs.

So far he's only released on album in the 2010s and that's 2013's SONGS FROM ST SOMEWHERE, which debuted at #4.

8 Top Ten albums, starting in the 1990s. Not bad for someone that started out back in 1970 with an album next to no one bought.

The parrothead phenomenon really hit in the late 80's right? Fruitcakes was the first studio album in like 5 years and it was around that same time. So the loyal following from that point fueled the album sales I guess.

Also not bad for someone who get almost no radio airplay. Once in a very great while, on the local classic rock stations, I'll hear Margaritaville or Come Monday, and the country stations play It's Five O'Clock Somewhere, but those are all you ever hear and they are few and far-between.

6-19-1989 to 5-24-1994 without a new album... that was crazy.

Fruitcakes (the LP version at that!) got a ton of radio play in Chicago at the time. It was mind blowing.

Do you remember which songs from the album were getting radio play?

Fruitcakes, the LP version. I did happen to hear EGACIMiami one time but it was, when I was able to get near the radio anyway, which was for certain hours in the mornining and evening, Fruitcakes the LP version. The day the LP came out they played Sunny Afternoon and Uncle John's Band as well at some point.

I think Fruitcakes was on regular rotation on WLUP for about 3 weeks.

That's really cool, but then the Loop is an awesome radio station.

I managed to record a re-broadcast at that time of when he was there during the RECE$$ION RECE$$ tour, I believe, and he sang Fruitcakes with his acoustic. It was different than how it turned out. I lost that recording. It was awesome.
