The writing of "Margaritaville"

Post by Air M'Ville Cap'n » Sat Nov 07, 2015 10:03 pm

You've probably heard that Jimmy wrote the lyrics to Margaritaville in just a few minutes. And that the inspiration was in Texas. This Q&A at the American Library in Paris is really great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egS7hZl ... e=youtu.be . Give it a watch.

In the video, he elaborates on the writing of M'Ville around the 22 minute mark. He had played some gigs in Texas, and it was really hot and he went to a Mexican restaurant with a friend and they had a couple margaritas. "Man that tasted good." He started writing it on the way to the plane. Flew to Miami. Got on the highway to Key West and he got stuck in traffic due to an accident for about an hour, and he finished the song there in the car.

That's a great video. JB talking about whatever. It would be great if he was able to do that about his entire career! Take a month and talk about each year etc.

Kind of a "video memoir." That would be worth watching!

He could easily lump DOWN TO EARTH and HIGH CUMBERLAND JUBILEE together since they were recorded so close and talk about that struggle. Then get to the ABC years...

AWSCAAPC - HAVANA DAYDREAMIN' into one big segment since it's mostly Key West songs.

CILCIA-SOASOAS-YHTBT- VOLCANO-COCOUNT TELEGRAPH into another big segment.

SOMEWHERE OVER CHINA-OPH into one and talk about MCA ruining his releases...

Skip the unnecessary ones and to...

SYKBH (the biggest selling Buffett album EVER)-FLORIDAYS-HOT WATER-OFF TO SEE THE LIZARD-FEEDING FRENZY

Then the next group... a new way of dealing with MCA and the box set, I suppose; BEFORE THE BEACH, FRUITCAKES, BAROMETER SOUP-BANANA WIND (and I guess Xmas Island since it was done around the time of BW)...

DSTC-BHOTM-T,TH,S... T,TH,S being the last big live release and first for his finally independent record label...

That's enough. We don't need to know anything past that. We know what's happened since 2002. It's all corporate stuff anyway with literally a handful of studio albums from 02-013 and too many little live releases on record and video... blenders, drinks, hotels, frozen food, flip-flops, clothes, casinos and blah blah blah.

That's a great video. I love getting the backstory on how songs or albums were created. I wikipedia song and album titles all the time. It can make for surprisingly good reading.
