Bad way to start off this thread, but...

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/spring201 ... id=6150113

St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright injured his elbow Monday and is returning to St. Louis to have it examined by team doctors.

General manager John Mozeliak said Wednesday that "things do not look encouraging" for the 2010 Cy Young Award runner-up, based on the initial evaluation by the training staff, and believed it is a "significant injury."

He said the right-hander injured his elbow in Monday's bullpen session.

"There's a problem with the ligament," Mozeliak said, according to the New York Daily News. "But it doesn't look good."

Shelby Miller may make the opening day roster after all.

One of the three most valuable commodities in the Cardinals' clubhouse, Wainwright probably won't be in the clubhouse -- in uniform -- very often this summer. He has been betrayed by the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. If a second opinion -- that of renowned orthopedist Lewis Yocum -- confirms what the Cardinals' medical people suspect, Tommy John surgery awaits Wainwright.Club doctors in St. Louis examined Wainwright on Wednesday and the results of magnetic resonance imaging done in Florida on Tuesday. Nothing they detected altered their thinking or the perception expressed here Wednesday morning by general manager John Mozeliak, that Wainwright must undergo the reconstructive procedure named after the former White Sox, Dodgers and Yankees pitcher who had his left elbow reconstructed in 1974.

If they wait until the deadline in July, it could be too late. How's this Josh, we'll give you Derek Lowe and a prospect, and you give us Rasmus for centerfield. That's a fair trade given the Cardinals' circumstance at the moment

It takes about 2 full seasons to recover from Tommy John surgery. The usual schedule seems to be missing the entire season and then in the second season, pitching from the bullpen, maybe a spot start once in a while, and then, the third season their back at full strength. Chris Carpenter is a prime example. He was a really good pitcher before TJ surgery, after he was completely recovered, he became a great pitcher. Having a "barely used" ligament in the pitching arm makes a huge difference. If Wainwright has TJ surgery and follows the typical pattern, he's going to be downright scary in two years. Not that that helps the Cardinals now, but looking down the road, Wainwright will be back and should be better than ever.

Free agent P Kiko Calero to tryout for the Redbirds

P Kiko Calero originally broke into the big leagues with the
Cards back in 2003, and now he's trying to see if he can revive
his career with them. SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that Calero will
throw for the Cardinals as a tryout.

The 36 yr old RHP signed a minor league contract with the Mets
last year, only to be released. He then hooked on with the Dodgers
only to be released yet again. In 25 Triple-A appearances last year,
Kiko (whose real name is Enrique) posted a 7.03 ERA with 7.6 K/9
and 4.5 BB/9 in 32 innings.

Prior to last season, we heard that Calero, who pitched to a 1.95 ERA
with 10.4 K/9 and 4.5 BB/9 in 60 innings with the Marlins in 2009,
wasn't drawing much interest because his "medicals [were] so bad
that everybody [was] wary." He's battled major shoulder injuries in
the past.

I wonder how Waino's injury will affect his free agency? His contract is going to be up while he's on the shelf. Will he get less money?

I think he actually has an option that hinges whether he's on the DL at the end of the year, which he obviously will be. Will be interesting to see how Cards handle it. Obviously gotta take care of the guy though.

They'd be nuts not to sign him to some sort of contract, because he'll be back as good as ever, if not even better, eventually. They took a chance on Carp while he was still rehabbing from TJ surgery and signed him as a free agent, so IDK why they wouldn't work out something with Waino. Probably a base salary with incentives for certain benchmarks or something.
