Feeding Frenzy is Jimmy Buffett's second live album, and third live release (You Had to Be There (1978) was his first live album, and Live By the Bay (1985) which was a live video recorded in Miami).

FF has it's pros and cons. For the most part, it is a great live album. The sound quality is excellent. The playlist that MCA chose to release is pretty much a faithful structure to your average Jimmy Buffett show--half of the concert consists of the standards and favorites, while the other half consists of classics, new songs, and covers.

The thing that bothers me about this album is two things. 1) It's two-tracks too short. 2) The playlist is all cut up. On the FF album, after Jimmy plays Last Mango in Paris and before he starts Come Monday, Jimmy states "De ja vu… to you. Yes, I have been here before." This is an obvious reference to Off to See the Lizard, and is obvious that the engineers cut out that track. It makes you think, "Well, why didn't they just put that song on the album? We know they just deleted it. There's enough space on the CD." Two years later, on the box-set of Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballad, another song deleted from FF was a sweet little ballad called Everlasting Moon which got its space on the box set. It's another one of those things that make you say, "Why didn't you just put it on the album?"

Lastly, most parrotheads seem to complain about Today's Message, and A Love Song (From a Different Point of View) (which is basically an alternate title for Why Don't We Get Drunk). Today's Message is a six and a half minute ramble of politics and celebrities in 1990s. The track itself is, in my humble opinion, a nice little lead-up to WDWGD&S; however, with all the fancy editing they did in order to deleted Off to see the Lizard and Everlasting Moon from the album, I think they could've trimmed Today's Message down to (at most) three-minutes. As for the change-in-title on WDWGD&S, it seems to bother a lot of Parrotheads, but not me because it is a nice surprise to those who bought the album. I mean, when I first purchased FF, I wasn't expecting to hear WDWGD&S, so I kind of had the same reaction as did those who were actually at the show.

In conclusion, if you want to know what a Buffett concert is like, this album is the best example of a "typical" Buffett show. I also must give props to all the parrotheads in the crowd who made a great contribution during A Love Song (From a Different Point of View)… it's like us parrotheads are a family.


I give this album a **** (out of five).

I still have a soft spot for You Had To Be There for documented live Buffett recordings but agree about how great Feeding Frenzy sounds. One of my favorite moments is a Mac one and that's the rendition of "The City" from that record.

As for what didn't make the album, that's the record industry at work for ya. Perhaps when Buffett's albums get the reissue/remaster treatment some (if not all) of these tracks will be restored to their proper place on Feeding Frenzy even if it means re-releasing it as a double disc set.
