Which reminds me of that old joke about biker bars. If they are serving food, and the cook offers to add the "special sauce", NEVER accept it. You don't know what's in it.

I wonder what my friends do when they go out without me, since all of them always have me figure out the tip and what they owe on the bill. Good thing I'm honest.

When all else fails I tell them that doubling the tax is always a safe bet (assuming the sales tax is at least 8% in most places), then adding more if the service was excellent and/or you were hogging a table for a lengthy time. Apparently figuring out percentages is tough for many people.

I've stiffed a handful of servers in my life....usually because they were horrid, but by and large I tip pretty well.

Sometimes I think the tip thing has just gotten out of hand....JUST FREAKING PAY THE PEOPLE.....

Even fast food places have 'TIP JARS' on the counter now.....are you KIDDING me....?

I do tip at my fave local restaurant at the marina. It's a short order place...but they do bring your food out to you and will come by with the coffee pot if they aren't too busy. I can spend a couple hours there on a Sunday morning breakfast, reading the paper, drinking coffee and watching the boats. They have a tip jar on the counter and I will always toss a couple bucks in there, as do most of the regulars. Also, it's not unusual for customers to grab the coffee pots and make the rounds to the tables giving refills...it's just that kind of place.

When I worked at the winery people would often try to tip me and I'd tell them I couldn't accept their money (I honestly thought I couldn't...no one had ever mentioned tips). I was just doing my job. One day I was working with a friend and someone insisted on tipping us no matter how hard I tried to convince him not to...she told me later that she always accepted tips since we worked like dogs and got paid so little. Boy was I kicking myself!

KW (or perhaps the world) has gotten rediculous with tip jars. A new tenant has taken over my little neighborhood store, 1/3 the size of a 7-11. Just services the neighborhood. Even if you've come here for 20 years, you wouldn't know it. Anyway, the owners (tenants) are operating it and have put out a tip jar. They are thinking I should tip them for marking up a loaf of bread a dollar and keeping the profit for themselves. Yeah, I'll get right on it.

Maybe I should put a tip jar on my desk
or quit my job and just stand on the street corner with a tip jar.

I only tip at restaurants or bars where someone serves me not if I go into a sub shop and pick up my food to take home.
