Jimmy kicked things off with “The Wino and I Know” and ended the show with “Trying to Reason With Hurricane Season.” A notable addition to the set list was “Everybody’s Got a Cousin in Miami.”

Perhaps it was the Miami Heat’s victory over the New York Knicks the night before at the AmericanAirlines Arena but Heat fan Jimmy Buffett seemed in particularly good spirits and warm voice Saturday night at the AmericanAirlines before a sizable, but not quite sold-out, crowd for his first concert of 2012.

“This is as wild as the Heat game last night,” Buffett grinned before thousands of fans after the concert opening deep album cut, The Wino and I Know.

Just before he started his first encore song some two hours later, the evergreen Fins, a barefoot Buffett thanked Pat Riley for the spiffy black shirt the Heat coach supposedly offered him backstage. The spotlight fell on Riley in the stands and he apparently seemed ready to partake in, or at least observe, the Fins concert ritual that Parrot Heads the world over have turned into a kind of boomer aerobics since the tour staple’s release in the summer of 1979. A familiar site: thousands of outstretched arms swoop atop the head like a shark’s dorsal fin and as the jolly chorus hits, arms and body move along to the lyric’s direction: “fins to the left, fins to the right.”

Buffett also took a cheerful jab at his history inside this particular bayfront venue. “I can say anything I want on this stage and not get thrown out,” he cracked, a reference to an incident in Feb. 2001 when he was ejected from his courtside seat by a referee during a Heat/Knicks game for reportedly engaging in language saltier than that found in some of his classics such as Why Don’t We Get Drunk.

Another February day, this one two years earlier, saw Buffett get ejected from a Heat – Kicks game at the AA Arena. Read about the incident here.

“The Pascagula Run,” “Why Don’t We Get Drunk,” and Nadirah’s “Use Me.”

He then continued with One Particular Harbour but called it a night after Margaritaville, not doing the two encore songs listed.

Jiffy Lube Live, which is owned and operated by concert promotion colossus Live Nation, says that the decision was inspired by their patrons’ unhappiness over the ban.

“Fan feedback is critical to help improve our operations and create the best possible concert experience for our fans,” Matt Rogers, the venue’s general manager, said in an email. “The decision was made after listening to our fans and doing our due diligence.”

Rogers says that meant researching the tailgating policies of more than 30 sports arenas and concert venues across the country to find out what works and what doesn’t.

“With the new policy and guidelines, we want nothing more than to work with our fans to create a safe and friendly “pre-concert” environment,” he said.

So here are the rules. Grills will now be allowed. Tents and canopies will still be forbidden. Driving aisles must be kept clear of chairs and tables. And members of the Prince William County police, the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and Jiffy Lube Live staff will continue to enforce a ban on open alcohol containers in the parking lot. Underage drinking will also be targeted aggressively, Rogers said.

“Jiffy Lube [Live] coordinated with us in making this policy change and we feel that their operational plan will create a safe and manageable environment in the parking lot,” said Maj. Stephen Hudson, Assistant Chief of the Prince William County police in an email.

Jiffy Lube Live (formerly Nissan Pavilion) outside of Washington, DC has been an annual stop for Jimmy Buffett for years.

Opening the show with Viva Las Vegas, Buffett played a mostly standard show, but ended with the Bruce Springsteen classic “Glory Days” before playing “Defying Gravity” as the finale.

Buffett played nearly 30 shows on the Fin Land Tour this summer, making a few stops at places he hadn’t been in several years (Virginia Beach, Cuyahoga Falls, Phoenix, Denver). Go to our archives to relive the tour.

For those of you already wondering about next year, the spring and summer dates are usually announced in January or February. Buffett sometimes plays a few shows in January or February too. Last year it was Australia and New Zealand, while in years past it’s been Florida.

As Hurricane Irene bears down on the eastern seaboard, Buffett closed the show with “Trying to Reason With Hurricane Season.” He told the crowd that he hoped Irene would veer east so the show could go on this Saturday at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Virginia.

Currently the track shows Irene in southern Virginia on Saturday evening as a Category 2 hurricane with 105 mph winds, with strong effects felt in Bristow:

The weather apparently caused the show to be shortened too, as Buffett only played 23 songs, instead of the usual 25 or 26 that he’s been playing at concerts this year. Only two songs were played during the encore, with “Last Man Standing” finishing out the set.
