The Jimmy Buffett restaurant – touted as the marquee attraction in a major expansion slated for Stampede grounds – is facing new hurdles as the company behind the Canadian arm of the chain comes under new ownership.

A Toronto-based company in the process of purchasing Margaritaville Canada will be evaluating the Calgary project once the transaction is complete, said it’s head, Dragan Matovic.

“We are going to be speaking with the various developers there and the folks at the Stampede in the near future once this transaction is hopefully completed, and then we’ll decide accordingly.”

Bryan McFarland, principal of development, is in Calgary this week, meeting with several retailers, including existing tenants and new prospects.

“Whatever happens with Margaritaville, we’ve got a great lineup of tenants to either replace them or supplement them,” he said.

Margaritaville was to be the anchor tenant and include live entertainment and a sports bar.

Matovic said his numbered company is in the final stages of negotiating an agreement to acquire the Margaritaville licence rights for Canada.

“Subsequently, we would start focusing in on several major issues, one of which would be the growth of the company going forward and obviously assessing the merits of the Calgary project,” he said.

It’s too soon to make decisions before the company purchase is complete, he said, adding that the Calgary restaurant “sounds like an interesting opportunity.”

Plans were first announced for a Calgary location in the summer of 2009. An official website is up at www.margaritavillecalgary.ca but there’s no content.

After years of idling, it looks like a Margaritaville Casino is finally coming “down around Biloxi.” However, it will be at a new location: the old East Harrison County Industrial Park on 5th Street. There is no word yet on what will happen to the old site along the Biloxi coast that has become an eye sore to local residents.

The Sun-Herald says that the 68,000-square-foot, $48 million resort should be open by the end of the year. When completed, it will feature a casino, restaurant, shops, an events center, and a marina.

To get the project built and open by the end of the year, Cavanaugh said the city and Gaming Commission have agreed to expedite the approval process. It tentatively is heading to the Biloxi Planning Commission as soon as Feb. 2, to the City Council on Feb. 15 or 22 and the Gaming Commission on Feb. 24.

Here is the original artist rendering for the resort that was announced in 2007 and was subsequently scrapped:

The construction cranes are about to be taken down at the site of the stagnant Margaritaville project on Biloxi’s Casino Row.

Harrah’s executive John Payne called WLOX News Wednesday to let us know that over the next few weeks, the cranes would be disassembled. However, Payne emphasized that his company still intends to find new partners and complete the Margaritaville expansion.

Payne said the idle cranes cost Harrah’s $10,000 a month. Since they’re not being used, the company determined it would be more cost effective to remove them from the east Biloxi property.

The developers have been looking for partners since at least November of last year.

Unveiled in 2007, the original plans called for a $700 million resort with 798 rooms, a full-service spa, a pool/deck area with cabanas, bar and tropical landscaping, all on 46 acres of land south of U. S. Highway 90.

A plan to turn the Trump Marina Casino in Atlantic City into a Margaritaville-themed casino and hotel fell through in June of last year.

2009 was another big year for Jimmy Buffett. His summer tour was hugely successful again, he partnered with the Miami Dolphins to rename their home field Landshark Stadium, and a new album dropped in December.

Jimmy Buffett christened his new Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber restaurant in Waikiki in style last night, putting on a nonstop two-hour concert for invited guests and VIPs.

“I refuse to participate in this recession,” Buffett told a cheering crowd, many of whom wore balloon animals in the shape of shark fins and parrotheads.

Dressed in his trademark yellow T-shirt, red board shorts and standing in bare feet, Buffett brought out old standards like “Come Monday,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and “Margaritaville,” played “Dukes on Sunday” with local favorite Henry Kapono and jammed all night alongside ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro and most of his Coral Reefer band.

He also premiered some new songs, basically putting on a full concert preview for fans who also came to town for Buffett’s concert tomorrow night at the Waikiki Shell.

With an estimated annual income of more than $40 million, you might mistake his portfolio for that of Warren Buffett (not a relative). And he’s done it by sailing beyond most musicians’ ticket, T-shirt and poster revenue stream.

The title of his most popular song is showing up on restaurants, clothing, booze and casinos. Among the products he’s involved with are Landshark Lager, the Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant chains, clothing and footwear, household items and drink blenders. The Margaritaville cafe on the Las Vegas strip is said to be the top grossing restaurant in the nation.

On July 23rd, The Sun Herald reported that work was slowing down on the Margaritaville Casino project in Biloxi, Mississippi. Now, Harrah’s says that the scope and size of the project is shrinking considerably:

The original $700 million estimated cost of the casino resort on the beach in Biloxi is being revised “down, down,” Harrah’s officials said during a conference call Friday.

About $110 million has been invested in Margaritaville as of June 30, and the company anticipates another $40 million to $45 million will be spent through the remainder of the year.

Harrah’s President Gary Loveman said they slowed construction of Margaritaville casino for a couple of reasons. “First, because business conditions in that market are very trying and new capacity is not exactly what that market needs in the short term.”

Loveland said Harrah’s also intends to refine the scope and the cost estimates for Margaritaville Casino “as carefully as possible to make sure that we build exactly what it is we think is prudent in that market. So we have slowed down the pace to regather ourselves” he said, to ensure Margaritaville “is appropriately sized and configured for the marketplace.”

The Patriot News reports that the casino won’t open as Margaritaville until at least next summer:

The sale of the Marina is expected to take six to nine months and will require approval by the New Jersey Casino Control Commission.

That means Parrotheads, the devoted fans of Buffett and the laid-back beach lifestyle made famous by “Margaritaville,” won’t see the new property until at least next summer.
