Jimmy Buffett Taking Another Crack at Gaming

April 24th, 2016

Jimmy Buffett is taking another stab at gaming his Margaritaville brand. In 2012 he released Margaritaville Online, and this summer he’ll release The Margaritaville Game.

Now the crooner-turned-entrepreneur’s company is looking to further extend his chilled-out, tropically resonant brand into new avenues of media and entertainment, starting with a casual mobile game slated to launch this summer.

Margaritaville Enterprises, aiming to delight Buffett buffs, is creating the app with game developer FunPlus. The Margaritaville game, to be released around Comic-Con International in July, will let fans find their lost shakers of salt and explore other Margaritaville-themed experiences in “a virtual paradise.”

Heading up Margaritaville Enterprises’ content initiatives is Laura Lee, president of media and chief digital officer, who joined the company last year after eight years at YouTube. “Margaritaville is so much more than just a product or a destination — it’s a lifestyle — and we want to bring that escapist attitude to the digital realm with Margaritaville’s first-ever casual mobile game,” Lee said.

Margaritaville Restaurant Finally Coming to California

April 23rd, 2016

The New York Times has a great article on Jimmy Buffett and his business empire. It’s a good read, includes an interview with Jimmy Buffett and his partner, and reveals that Margaritaville is finally coming to California:

The company’s first resort, a planned $700 million casino and hotel in Biloxi, Miss., was delayed by the late-2000s economic collapse. Margaritaville eventually opened a much smaller hotel in Biloxi, but it went belly up, perhaps because the company picked a bad location. This month Mr. Cohlan announced a third attempt, set to open later this year. This time, there will be more of a family focus, and no casino. Eight more Margaritaville hotels, including one in Grand Cayman, are in various stages of development.

Margaritaville’s signature restaurant chain is expanding quickly — it will soon push into California for the first time, opening at Universal Studios Hollywood — but a spinoff series of restaurants in the Midwest called Cheeseburger in Paradise has struggled. Margaritaville sold its Cheeseburger stake in 2005 and, since then, roughly half the locations have closed as the brand was lobbed between owners.

Miss. Governor Signs “Buffett Beach” Into Law

April 21st, 2016

Soon you’ll be able to waste away on Buffett Beach in Pascagoula, Mississippi:

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant wasn’t wasting away any time signing a bill to honor Jimmy Buffett.

The beach just blocks from the musician’s childhood home in Pascagoula will now carry his name. City leaders said they want the world to know they are proud that the famous singer-songwriter was born in Pascagoula. They say putting Buffett’s name on the beach would boost the city’s tourism market.

Officials told us previously they hope to hold the dedication ceremony for Buffett Beach on May 6, 2017. The city already dedicated a bridge to the singer in September 2015.
